Death toll at 21 after cartel attacks Mexican border town

Mexican security forces on Sunday killed seven more members of a presumed cartel assault force that rolled into a town near the Texas border and staged an hour-long attack, officials said, bringing the death toll to at least 21. The Coahuila state government said in a statement that lawmen aided by helicopters were still chasing remnants of the force that arrived in a convoy of pickup trucks and attacked the city hall of Villa Union on Saturday.

The governor said the armed group — at least some in military style garb — stormed the town of 3,000 residents in a convoy of trucks, attacking local government offices

The town is about 35 miles (60 kilometers) south-southwest of Eagle Pass, Texas, and 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the town of Allende — site of a 2011 massacre involving the Zetas cartel in which officials say 70 died.

Falko Ernst, senior Mexico analyst for the non-profit Crisis Group, which seeks to promote peace, said there are few incentives for armed groups in the country to refrain from violence. “Solving this issue — which underpins impunity — would have to be the centerpiece of an integrated security strategy. But such a thing is yet to be presented by (President) López Obrador and his team,” said Ernst.

Mexico’s murder rate has increased to historically high levels, inching up by 2% in the first 10 months of the presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

How much longer will Obrador be able to stick with his “respect and opportunity” approach to the cartels? Mexico is teetering on the edge of becoming a failed state due to his distaste for law and order.

Only a matter of time until this spills across the border
And the cartel will soon own local govt officials and cops in Texas just like in Mexico as it will be mostly Mexican immigrants in those positions along the border counties within 10-20 years

Becoming? shite son, Mexico has been a failed state. It’s essentially a narco state and has been for some time.

Sounds like there will be some really great estate auctions happening there soon.

He's a leftist isn't he? I saw the other day that he provided shelter for that socialist/communist from Bolivia. He will tolerate the violence just as those leftist leaders in California do.

He ran on a campaign of ending the drug wars. Thinks that the problem isn’t corruption/lack of law enforcement, but actually just lack of opportunity. Now there is some truth to this, but he’s taking a 100% carrot / 0% stick approach to the problem, which basically never works.
For example, in this incident all they’ll do is leave an elevated security force in the town for a few days then withdraw and forget about it. Zero consequences for the cartel.

And when it does Trump needs to send that brand new military that he has to establish a twenty mile buffer zone on the border. Just like Erdogan did in Syria. He should tell the Mexican president, you either get it done or we will.

Yep. That is a good idea. Security Buffer Zone inside of Mexico.

Thee have been issues along the border already. Not as large scale. The big difference is we (Americans) have the ability and willingness to fight back both officially (govt) and unofficially (citizens). Mexicans can’t.

Cartel knows killing American citizens would bring down heat on them because they have little influence on our federal Govt

My dad lived in El Paso and Douglas, Az before I was ever born working into grandfathers blood plasma centers on the border. He dated a Mexican girl whose brother was Cartel. I can tell you those border town cops, mayors, businessmen are all on Cartel payroll and have been since the 80s.
How do you think all those drugs get through? My dad said it’s all locally organized and everyone makes bank, the cops will make a “bust” once in awhile to appear legit. Almost always the bust is on an outsider trying to get in the game

That is why there needs to be a border zone. Tear down those shithole towns and deport the occupants to the south beyond the zone. Would end the problem. Would end the problem with the illegals crossing also. I would even offer to buy the land from Mexico. Trump needs to make me Homeland Security Secretary.

Time for Trump to declare the cartels what they are: terroristic threats and take the gloves off.....this is no longer simply a law enforcement problem.
