Australia’s oldest scientist, who caused a stir when his university tried to vacate his office aged 102, will fly to Switzerland in early May to end his life, reigniting a national euthanasia debate.
David Goodall, who is now 104, does not have a terminal illness but his quality of life has deteriorated and he has secured a fast-track appointment with an assisted dying agency in Basel, euthanasia advocates said.
Interesting story. I’m not sure why as a civilized society we don’t offer up euthanasia to people. Even those with non terminal conditions.

If someone wants to end their life shouldn’t we respect that?

He should be studied to see what the secret is to his longevity. When these centurnarians (sp?) pass on and they cut them up, they find all sorts of pre-clinical diseases, that for some reason never advance.
I wonder if this guy is just depressed. What evidence is there that his quality of life is so bad?

If it’s based on quality of life and rational thought, who am I to tell someone they MUST live.
I will never support someone taking another’s life who is unwilling or unknowing (outside of criminal justice)
But who am I to tell a rational person they can’t make their own decisions

As long as he's of sound mind and is the one seeking this out, I don't understand why anyone would have any issue with this. It's the ultimate form of personal freedom.

You can put a gun in your mouth and kill yourself. Cant arrest you for it when youre dead.

Assisted suicide. Let’s say someone is in a lot of pain or like the scientist in the story his quality of life deteriorated to the point he doesn’t want to live anymore. Instead of forcing them to suffer through it wouldn’t the humane thing be to allow them a way to end their life painlessly?

Can we say that someone that seeks out death is in sound mind? Not saying I have an issue with it, just a thought.

This.
Doesn't mean doctors should participate.

Blowing your head off produces all sorts of unintended outcomes. Someone has to find you, your family is traumatized by the gore and suddenness, casket is closed, etc. Not to mention you can fail and maim yourself for life.
This way avoids all that

Many do, but why force people to resort to that?

What if nobody wants to kill you?

Why doesn't he just shoot himself in the head?
Or chase a bottle of pills with a 1/5 of Jack Daniel's

No doctor should be forced to but are you saying they shouldn’t be allowed to in general?

Would you rather perform your own appendectomy or have a doctor do it?

You Progs/Dims actually practice being idiots! How do I know? Because your posts are a reflection of your persistent practice to perfect idiocy. Is DeadFish your understudy?
