Excellent piece on LBJ's war on poverty
This crazy chart showing a lot of the sources of welfare is really mind blowing

It's almost as if a political party is dependent on people being in poverty and acted to protect their voter base from becoming too affluent to vote for them anymore.

Too bad the Democratic Party still embraces this. Keep the poor people poor, and give them a glimmer of hope come election season with empty promises. Then four years later.......wash, rinse, repeat.

The war on poverty was not actually a war on poverty
It was a war on the negative effects of being in poverty. It was symptom relief, not a cure.
The only way to get people out of poverty is to make them more productive

Black families were strong 2 parent house holds in the 50s and quickly gaining traction to move strong into the middle class and become very strong members of society and the work force.
LBJ made sure that didn't happen.

That my friend is the very definition of the Democrat Party.

That's the entirety of the federal government since FDR in a nutshell.

I remember my position on it in 1965.
'When you reward a behavior you get more of it. This will reward poverty. So, we'll get more poverty.'

This only works because the average American is an idiot and deserves the representation they get. IE Compton deserves Maxine Waters.

After $20+ trillion spent on this war,
where can I surrender?

Republicans have done NOTHING to scale this back. NOTHING. Don't blame the Democrats, at least those as*holes are honest about it.

Blacks were more likely to own their home then whites and had fewer out of wedlock children back then as well. They were on the verge of being the next big ethnic group success, right up there with the Irish and Italians.
I'm a political moderate and proud of it... but our welfare program has been a disaster for the lower class, no matter what the color of their skin is.

Honest about what? Being fraudulent to a group of voters in order to maintain their power?
Republicans attempt to scale back by cutting government funding to many parts to welfare programs. The problem is that the Democratic Party exposes it and exclaims "Look what they did to you," while continuing to campaign on their victimhood.
It's not the Republicans fault that they tell these people to get off their a$$ and go earn a living on their own accord.

Maybe because every time they try to, everyone screams racism and riots ensue.

Haha!
Democrats are honest about saying they are going to tax the rich and give it to the poor.
Republicans have controlled both houses and the presidency and still increased gov't spending on these programs. They sure as hell haven't ever cut anything meaningful. They talk a big game, but when have power do NOTHING but buy more votes by increasing gov't spending.
Voted how many times to repeal Obamacare when not in control, but when they were had nuts the size of raisins and did virtually nothing.

so? The fact remains that Republicans have had MANY opportunities to scale back the welfare state and NEVER done it in any meaningful way. Even when Reagan was president, nothing of any consequence was done and by some accounts social spending INCREASED.
