Infected 83,000 or .00001% of world population and virtually 0.0% in USA

Killed 2800 or .00000035% of world population and none in USA. Zero, nada deaths in USA

Media has produced enough fear from above numbers that over 10% of stock market wealth has been eliminated

Is this the biggest scam ever committed against the world and it’s people? Has media acted criminally to lose people’s wealth? Should they be held accountable?

We will soon awake and realize all the above

So far flu has killed many more people worldwide and in the USA. Something like 34K last year in the US and 16K so far this season.
BUT

With flu vaccines are available and the lethality is estimated to be about twenty times less than COVID-19. Flu tends to hit the very young and the very old. COVID-19 has been lethal to healthy young adults as well as older men who smoke.

The virus has now been reported in more than 60 countries worldwide and seems to be spreading rapidly. Modern medicine will, no doubt, keep the death toll lower than the 40 million of the 1918 pandemic, but this is a dangerous situation.

Minimizing the danger and taking no serious action is a sure path toward worse results than necessary.

Do tell us who in a position to do anything about it is doing that.

Oh wait no! We must throw 3 times the money because Schumer said so and Trump is bad!

because if we do not appropriate $8 billion RIGHT NOW we can never just add to the $2.5 billion next week if needed

There has not been a single death in America due to the coronavirus and there is not one patient in critical condition here because of it either. Don't let the media do it to you man.

So

1. Relating this to the “world’s population” is a completely BS statistic.
2. Here’s the math you need to do:

(2800*100)/83000=3.37%

So, for every 100 or so infected people, just under 3.5 die.

Compare this to influenza...for every 100,000 infected people, around 2 die.

That’s because we haven’t been testing for it and really have no idea how many people have it.

Do you have stock in a company working on a virus?

Wouldn’t that kind of throw doubt on your death rate numbers?

Just take comfort in the fact that if it is a huge scam, that someone will investigate it and you’ll get the results/findings by 2030.

I’m just sold on the fact that we have to keep beating the bureau at the voting booth.

The OP doesn’t suggest not taking action, but he is absolutely correct about the coverage and it’s pretty apparent why they are doing it.

It’s very careless and irresponsible the way the media and Dems are reacting. It’s just wrong.

The higher mortality rate probably has more to do with the fact that people who were infected were treating this like the flu when the virus was still unknown. The vast majority of those deaths occurred in Wuhan where the outbreak originated from.

Now that we know what we're dealing with, look for the mortality rate to decline in the coming days and weeks.

Do you realize you're responding to a lib who is happy about events that might paint Trump in a bad light?

Taking “action” against what? A virus that is treatable and isn’t a threat to the US. You are correct about the media and the democrats using this as a tool against people who can’t think for themselves.

The Stock Market is reacting to the economic impact of the virus causing temporary supply shortages and business closures more than anything.

The unknown factor of this virus and how contagious it is makes the market people wonder if these shortages will last longer than anticipated.

All of this will come back once the virus is eventually contained or has run its course. The hotter spring and summer temps are anticipated to cause the virus to go dormant (like the flu) and crop back up next winter.

I expect that since the virus is so contagious that it will eventually make its way all over the USA.

The bad thing about this will not necessarily be getting sick with the virus (because most all of us will survive), Its the panic and run on food and supplies that will cause temporary shortages and uncertainty.

Those numbers are largely from other places where the outbreak is more widespread at this point. Our response to this has been absolutely ridiculous. First, we allowed flights from China to continue for two months after this was first identified, and airlines only voluntarily suspended flying due to a drop in demand. Second, the test kits we came up with had a bad reagent and so we don’t have the ability to engage in widespread testing, Third, because of idiocy like “choosing wisely”, physicians are already under pressure not to order rapid flu testing. So if you have a patient who comes in with a fever and respiratory symptoms without significant hemodynamic abnormalities you’re probably going to end up discharging them without really knowing what they have. When they bounce back septic is when they will end up in the ICU +/- a CT scan...
