This is a very shallow and lazy take on the issue. It's real intent is to shut any real discussion down

the government is pandering to create an example of why giving up free speech isn't that bad.. they villify, draft up "common sense laws" to remedy situation, and then enact said laws. each one is designed to make you trust the govt more and willfully give up more rights.

That would require I care about what anyone here thinks about me, don't you think?

This. The biggest mistake our ancestors made was believing that a political union with Puritans was a politically palatable idea.

It's not about us, it's about the people you see as your betters in society.

You want to say things they'll like.

But no one I care about sees any of these messages? So why would I care about saying things that they'll like?

It ends when they make a new America with new founding fathers that is more multi racial. Virginia let it get out of hand and so if they want to destroy history let them. NO one is willing to fight for it.

It's become your identity, by writing here, you're reinforcing your sense of superiority, you've adopted the "correct behavior", and it gives you a sense of moral vindication.

It's driven by a desire for status.

Exactly what I thought. Can't back up those arguments against facts can you? Take your high school history education that you acquired from some football coach pretending to teach history and shove it up your Bolshevik butt.

I think you're over thinking this a little bit.

It's an internet forum.

I keep seeing this, and I can assure you that the Puritans would be the first to side with the South and string their own children up over Black Lives Matter, kid diddling, and George Floyd. The problem isn't Puritanism in American history. The problem is the badly-named "Enlightenment" that began the slippery slope from colonies dedicated to the worship and life of God, to rainbow dildos in public libraries. It wasn't the Puritans that changed Harvard from a minister's training school to a place where the chaplain is an atheist. The reason why the Conservative movement is so hesitant to put the blame on the Enlightenment (where it belongs) is because some of the prominent founding fathers were adherents, especially Jefferson who seemed to felate himself at times over the writings of Frenchmen.

Your average Southerner... Robert E. Lee included... had more in common with the Puritans than they did with men like Jefferson who thought that Christianity was useful, but ridiculous and soon to go away.

I agree, it destroyed Western Culture.

quote:

Puritans

I went to a Puritan boarding school, and I lived in New England for several years.

It's strange to me, because you can still see the structure of the old Puritan ideas in daily life. Everyone is watching everyone, you can feel the leash, and the community is always more important than individual. But the religion is dead. Everyone is an atheist.

They are a cold people too.

The Puritans had a contempt for everyone who wasn't like them. How you treated another Puritan was tightly regulated, but you were free to treat non-believers how you saw fit. In the end, this permitted savagery. They also could-not-tolerate dissension. This is why I hated living in New England. The Puritans had a religious compulsion to correct aberrant behavior, whenever they saw it. And that exists to this day. And it's why they are so concerned with Confederate Statues, and the memories of our ancestors. They can not tolerate other ways of living, or thinking. It must be destroyed.

the general consensus was that "Southerners" are basically morons and ignorant, treasonous, misguided idiots for honoring Confederate generals.

I have no desire to be insulting for the sake of it, but it doesn't make any sense to me, either.

I'm not sure I really believe anyone truly believes that the Civil War was not fought over slavery—but that aside—regardless of the reason for it, the Confederacy fought the United States. And lost.

I don't understand honoring people who fought a war against our country and lost.

I suppose the poster above who suggested that certain prominent figures might be honored for having attempted to help heal the divide depicted in street clothes might have a point, but otherwise it makes no sense to me.

It's like putting up statues of members of the Weather Underground or the Aryan Republican Army. O.k., maybe not exactly b/c the Confederate Army fought out in the open and the other two used terrorist tactics instead of fielding an army, but I would imagine that was a function of limitations of resources rather than a moral decision.

So I personally don't see people expressing negative opinions about southern people defending honoring what amounts to losing traitors against the United States as a sign of the impending apocalypse. Much more confusing to me is what you would expect people to conclude from it if not a negative perception.

The Confederates were heros. The civil war was not fought over slavery.

Lincoln was a tyrant. You'll find out soon enough when the communists make you a slave.
