Or are you asking me to think like the media, and weigh in on some Twitter strategy?

I'm happy to weigh in on tariffs if any ever get seriously proposed.

There you have it folks. According to IowaGolfer, we don't need to take the clearly- and publicly-stated intentions of this President or his Commerce Secretary seriously at all.

Canada, South Korea, and Brazil all have China has the top importer of their steel and those three are our top suppliers of steel products

Just looked up Canada. China only supplies 9% of Canada's steel and I'd imagine not all off that gets passed on to the U.S.

Where are you getting your numbers from?

We really don't. Have a look at the report that was used to justify the steel tariff--look on page 28.

In 2017, 2.18% of imported steel came from China. Canada contributed 16.1% of imported steel. Brazil, 13%. South Korea, 10.2%. Mexico, 9%. In fact, of the top 10 countries we imported steel from, China was number 11.

eta: the report the Commerce department used looks at 2011 - 2017 steel imports. During that time, this is what the US' imports from China have looked like:

Year % Share
2011 5.23%
2012 5.33%
2013 6.08%
2014 7.54%
2015 7.11%
2016 2.98%
2017 2.32%

Trade wars are bad and costs jobs. The Republican Party has been the beacon free trade and Trump is going against this philosophy. Will cost jobs. The one element of this tariff that I see is that steel and aluminum is vital for military armaments and being beholding to foreign governments is not secure. China only supplies us a little of this. Really heavy implications with Canada, the EU, Brazil, and Mexico.

Do you have any data besides "Trump told me bogeyman is Chinese!"?
