Coal Update: not great

quote:
In 2007, coal-fired capacity in the United States totaled 313 gigawatts (GW) across 1,470 generators. By the end of 2017, 529 of those generators, with a total capacity of 55 GW, had retired. So far in 2018, 11 GW of coal-fired generating capacity has retired through September, and another 3 GW are expected to retire in the final three months of the year, based on data reported to EIA by plant owners and operators. If these plants retire as planned, 2018 will be the second-highest year for coal retirements. Another 4 GW of capacity are planning to retire by the end of 2019.
Only one, relatively small, new coal-fired generator with a capacity of 17 megawatts is expected to come online by the end of 2019.
quote:
EIA expects total U.S. coal consumption in 2018 to fall to 691 million short tons (MMst), a 4% decline from 2017 and the lowest level since 1979. U.S. coal consumption has been falling since its peak in 2007, and EIA forecasts that 2018 coal consumption will be 437 MMst (44%) lower than 2007 levels, mainly driven by declines in coal use in the electric power sector.
The electric power sector is the nation’s largest consumer of coal, accounting for 93% of total U.S. coal consumption between 2007 and 2018. The decline in coal consumption since 2007 is the result of both the retirements of coal-fired power plants and the decreases in the capacity factors, or utilization, of coal plants as increased competition from natural gas and renewable sources have reduced coal’s market share.
Can this be stopped by our leaders in government, or anyone at all?

Tl;dr this is fake news. We are using clean coal.

Not surprising with our increase in cheap natural gas production.

Besides Rick Perry, people in the energy department are likely careerists hold overs from Obama. It means nothing to me

Jimmy Carter did it once. He put a moritorium on natural gas plants and forced coal upon people.
That's how we got coal plants like Big Cajun sitting on top of some of the largest natural gas fields in North America.

market forces will do what they will... the issue wasnt coal fading away, it was team Obama putting handcuffs on the coal industry trying to kill it off faster

Better stop selling those 'lectric cars then.

You're right about the clean burning coal but it's mainly new technology that has reburners and filters being put into play. Uses less coal and has a lot less coal emissions.
Bottom line is either they'll have to let us build newer cleaner burning coal plants (we're fighting to upgrade Santee Cooper here in SC) or they have to let us build more nuclear plants ... or they'll have to do better with solar here in the South, making it a more financially feasible option with tax credits and subsidized funding IF they want to be ready to handle power demands in the very near future.
Someone needs to decide.

It's not just that...it is far cheaper to construct gas-fired power plants than coal fired power plants...
Basically, most of our coal-fired plants are very, very old...we are running them into the ground and decommissioning them when the cost benefits are favorable...

Takes time to build new plants. Without knowing much about this it sounds like this is still the affects of Obama killing coal. More interesting data would be how much is in permitting and construction. The fact that a new one just came on board tells me there may be more.

uh, ok. the EIA tracks and reports all kinds of items relevant to the energy industry, like prices, production, and consumption

People on this board work in the oil industry and are just fine with coal getting shut down. Enjoy another downvote.

Not great? Is the update good, fair or poor in your opinion if it's not great.
