I should self-ban for posting a CNN article link. I’m sorry for doing this, but this article is so asinine that I had to share.

quote:

In 2018, however, the D-Day story carries even more power and weight because we live in a political climate that denigrates the very sources of strength that made the D-Day invasion such a dramatic success. Take Big Government. In today's political parlance, nothing could be worse than the bloated, inefficient federal government. Ronald Reagan built his career using the tag line: "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help." President Trump has mocked government, waging war against law enforcement and calling Washington a "swamp."

In 1944, government was not the enemy, it was the organizing force that won the war. The United States Armed Forces that fought and won World War II provide an enduring example of what good government can do. During the war, 16 million Americans put on a uniform. Americans paid high income taxes, rationed their food, worked in government-funded industries and sent their sons to die overseas to defend freedom. Being an American in 1944 meant working with fellow citizens, sharing sacrifices, and honoring the nation above individual needs.

quote:

President Trump has made it fashionable to deny the value of having allies, but D-Day reminds us that we are at our best when we stand together with our friends. On June 6, 1944, more British Commonwealth troops landed on the Normandy beaches than Americans. The commander of the ground forces that day was a Brit, General Bernard Montgomery, as were the commanders of the naval and air forces on that day. Victory over the Germans in France that summer came only through close partnership with our British and Canadian allies who fought and died alongside American boys to defend freedom.

What's next? We should apologize for kicking Germany's arse?

- what did Germany do to us?

- we beat Japan essentially by ourselves.

- Germany went nazi mostly because those “allies” fricked it so badly after WW1. Causing the problem to begin with.

- we have few common interests with Europe today.

That’s really my point. We fought our aggressors mostly alone, yet we sent massive resources and personnel to help fight Europe’s aggressors. I’m basically saying “save me the bull about fighting alongside Canada and the others.” That argument is being used like they helped us and couldn’t have done it without them. No, WE HELPED THEM and they would be part of Germany to this day if not for us.

Bingo...only CNN could try and reframe D-Day as a mission to save overpowering centralized government.

Just going to throw this here.

It was from a ceremony at the American cemetery in Normandy, I believe as part of D-Day commemoration.

Somehow I don’t think the First Lady of one country giving the one from another a “Bitch, please” look is in the spirit of D-Day.

What a ridiculous straw man argument. Conservatives have always been small government, strong military. They aren’t mutually exclusive.

Once Hitler blinked on taking Moscow it was just the slow meat grinder that always happens when a central Europe fricks with a Russia that has a powerful leader at it's head.

So because we banded together to fight our enemies, that means big government is good?

Incorrect. It was the civilian workforce, private industry fulfilling contracts in record time, and the blood, sweat, and tears of allied soldiers.

Good point. But I wonder if Hitler and Stalin wouldn’t have ended up in a stalemate, west of Russia of course, if we never joined and he was able to knock out Britain. He’d still have Mussolini and the Italians had we not joined as well. Russian attrition was horrible. I just wonder if that wouldn’t have caught up to them with a fully focused Germany and Italy, mostly Germany.

These motherfrickers have lost any semblance of rational thought.

This is an interesting spin but at the same time, the world is not facing an imminent evil that is a very real, global threat. If/when That day comes, we will stand once more by our allies. In the meantime, let's stop being the world police ffs.

And if the US had chosen not to become involved in the war, Europe would be all white and sprechen ze Deutsch.
