CMV: We need more prisons, not less.

Don't care how unpopular it may sound, but we need more prisons.

The fact is that the primary purpose of incarceration is to protect the good guys from the scumbags.

All too often, we are seeing repeat offenders walking the streets due to prison over crowding.

There is a line in the sand that sane, decent folk never cross.

When you cross that line, you have demonstrated that you are not fit to live in a civilized world.

Petty thieves all too often evolve into violent menaces who terrorize everyone in their orbit.

Now I know this is almost immediately going to be hijacked into a "muh War on Drugs" thread, but I'm over it.

I've spent tons of time IN and around that culture and know that the people getting caught up in the dragnet are more often than not really, really shitty people as opposed to the mythical " dude that had a joint under his seat and never bothered anyone and got sent to prison for 30 years".

(I know that dude, he's my old bass player and he did a lot more than simply have a roach in his ashtray.)

People love to scream "but we already have more people incarcerated than the rest of the blah blah blah", to which I say "tough".

Those high-incarceration rates are due to people being complete fk-ups, not some nefarious scheme against innocent folk minding their own business.

Decent, hard-working folks deserve the chance to live a life un-affected by shiteheads who refuse to work for a living.

Time to stop being nice.

CMV: We need more prisons, not less.

We need much harsher punishments for violent criminals, too. We are way too lenient on violent criminals in this country. Prison is apparently too comfortable because enough people seem willing to go back.

In certain cultures, it is seen as a badge of honor.

We need more enforcement of the laws and adjudication of those infractions. If that leads to the need for more prisons, then do be it.

However, we also need to just decriminalize drugs perhaps with the exception of selling to a minor.

Most places just need a DA that's willing to put people away. Some of yall live in places where the DA doesn't even try.

We need to go back 100 years and make them bare bones. No cable TV. No AC. Penal farms with GED classes & counseling only. There has to be a way to make the incarcerated pay for themselves

Maybe the prisons we have should be a lot harder knocks than they are and people will be a lot more scared of going to them. Think chain gangs and work crews.

Even those have to let people slide due to lack of bed space.

You never hear this from the gun grabbing left. Build more prisons so we can jail criminals with guns.

I don’t necessarily disagree, but I think a fundamental shift in the way prisons are run needs to happen. Prisons shouldn’t be used as a construction labor force. Whether we incarcerate more or less people, prisons need to be focused on rehabilitation and preparing these people to be constructive members of society when they leave. Right now, it’s about doing your time and getting out which really defeats the entire purpose. What benefit does serving time do if they just get released back into society no different than they were before? With that logic, we might as well just revoke their citizenship for 20 years and let them back in once it’s over.

We don't need more rape cages so that the average joe can feel good about getting revenge.

Disagree. It needs to be more punitive and people who go to prison should never, ever be comfortable with it or happy that they're there. It needs to be the most miserable place one could possibly fathom going to.

Most of them will never be productive members of society anyways, so why pretend that they might be?

Well...we can't really legislate: "more fathers" ...so we have to legislate " more prisons"
