I have never found the prices to be a savings. It was more about convenience when you're deployed and without transportation.

The surcharge is far less than the sales tax, about 4%, and the cleanliness and convenience of grocery shopping at the Commissary near my office is by far better than anything else in the area. Alcohol is far cheaper, gas is pretty much the same price but the station is right next to the exit gate I use so once again it's convenient and I don't have to worry about thugs and white trash antics or panhandlers.

The commissary that WAS on Carswell AFB- FW TX was very nice 30 years ago.
NEX commissaries overseas were nice because it was all we had.
