The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) has begun a vote to refuse in-person teaching due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The union announced Wednesday that over 80 percent of its 600-member House of Delegates voted to pass a resolution authorizing all of its members to conduct remote work only beginning Jan. 25.
The resolution now goes to the entire unit for a vote on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. CTU represents more than 25,000 teachers working in Chicago Public Schools (CPS).

The vote comes as CPS plans to resume in-person learning for preschool and some special education students next week. Kindergarten to eighth grade students can opt into in-person classes starting Feb. 1.
However, CTU had opposed the plan over safety corners, and contends that the district has refused to commit to basic safety measures.
“This is about a pandemic that has killed 400,000 Americans, and an overwhelming majority of our delegates are resolved to putting safety first and continuing to teach remotely,” CTU President Jesse Sharkey said in a statement Wednesday. LINK

Teachers are the only “essential workers” who have bitched about actually working this whole time.

We don't even wear masks here. 2 friends came from Frisco, TX to go fishing and they said "it's like the wild, wild west up here"
They couldn't believe that bars, stores, post offices, etc had zero masks.

I've gone to work everyday required since this began. I'm fine. We've had no cases attributed from being transferred at work. Large company with a manufacturing plant.

This is going to be fun to watch as it plays out. We've got D mayors all of sudden opening up, Cuomo calling to open up, the CDC revising what they count as COVID and the lazy teachers still wanting to get paid to stay home. Going to be fun watching the Ds approach to controlling the teachers unions.

The way my district does virtual school has teachers wanting to go back.
8:20 - 3:30 live with all the students in your class 90 minutes at a time with 10 minute breaks and 25 minutes for lunch.
Teachers were happy to go back to in person school.
My district is large over 13,000 teachers. 3 teachers have died of Covid and they looked younger than 55.
But there is no telling where they contracted Covid could have been school or could have been Wal Mart.

You know what happened when the Air Traffic Controllers refused to come to work? Reagan fired every one of their asses. And things were fine. Fire them all.

75% of those teachers likely aren't worth a damn anyway. And that might be too generous a number.

Living in Indiana in a suburb of Indianapolis, we were in what was considered one of the premier school districts. I have twins who graduated from there. My youngest really did not want to go there and decided he wanted to go to a small private school of around 300 students. He has loved it and we have not looked back. Our school district that was considered elite has totally screwed up COVID to the point the kids have not been in school at all this year. They cannot get the teachers to commit to coming to work and teaching the students.
I cannot tell you how many times I have been out around 11:00 am on a "virtual school day" and the volume of "students" out and about is crazy. Parents we are friends with are pissed. They say their kids are not learning anything. Grades are basically given out to keep the kids moving forward. All of a sudden the expensive suburb with great schools has morphed to become Indianapolis Public Schools and people are not happy. Glad we moved our son out two years ago.
EDIT: Our school has been in person everyday this year except when the health department closed every school in our county for 2 weeks. As soon as that was up, back in class went our kids.

So glad I live in Texas where we don’t have to deal with this nonsense. Kids have been in person since September.
I don’t think we’ve had a single teacher death or kid. Or even hospitalization or the news would be screaming about it.
They do hybrid where you get to pick. They’ve already said virtual isn’t an option next year. Hopefully they stick to it. If you want to still stay home come August go find and online platform. The strain hybrid has caused my wife this year is ridiculous and I think if they do it again half the teachers will resign. Teachers at our school have all been fantastic this year in spite of the hybrid but asking it again won’t fly.
Then you go read r/teachers and really get a feel as to why they get a bad name.

No more "teaching" from Key West or the Bahamas.

Teachers wanting to get paid for not teaching is nothing new, but the COVID excuse is.

And the CDC just changed their guidance. I thought we were following the science. Turns out . . . we're following whatever the Teacher's Unions say we're following. Of course, most of you already know.

I kinda thought Chicago teachers quit teaching, in person or otherwise, a long time ago...
