Headed to downtown soon. Should I not venture out from there?

I've been to Chicago like 4 times. I couldn't tell you. It all looks safer than NOLA.
Just don't sell drugs in someone else's territory and you should be fine.

Downtown is great. West of downtown is just okay until you get to Lincoln Park which is great. North of downtown is great. Just don’t go south of downtown, and you’ll be fine. Chicago is one of those cities where the crime is mostly confined to the bad areas and is rarely felt by tourists.
I recommend using their bike share program to get around downtown. It’s affordable, the bikes are really great, there’s convenient stations and bike lanes everywhere, the weather is perfect for it, and Chicago is a beautiful place to ride. The architecture, the lake shore, the relatively compact nature of the city makes it ideal.
Then, when you want to go up to Wrigleyville or to the airport, you can take the L

I heard West Garfield Park and Washington Park will give you the most genuine Chicago experience you can find.
Pretty much sticking with the South side of Chicago is the best bet.

I’d avoid the entire city. Military jets are flying over as we speak.

Downtown area is fine. Just avoid the southside and you'll be alright.
That being said occasionally the youth from the southside will head to Michigan ave to wild out, but that always seemed to be a weekend thing.

You meant staying out of the Southside, right?

Most genuine Chicago experience is on the Southside. Not sure why anyone would go elsewhere?

The Chicago gang territory map is telling. That said, just because you're in a zone marked for a gang does not mean you will be a victim of crime. But there are obviously areas of intense gang activity (south, west side) versus areas with a few territories and clear areas that are pretty quiet (north, southwest, far southeast).
PS - you can be a victim anywhere. Don't be aimlessly surfing the net on your phone while waiting for the subway with a fat wallet in your back pocket. Use your head. It's a great city.

I live one street away from a blue heart gang. Is that good or bad?

Downtown was nice earlier this summer. Cleaner than NOLA. Had to catch an uber from an L station and didn't feel like my life was in danger. Keep your head on a swivel and don't eyefrick anyone.
