Can we discuss ammo production
Posted by themunch on 7/31/20 at 7:50 pm51
There seems to be an ammo shortage blamed on Covids. Are all the manufacturers of ammo in affected areas that will not allow workers to work. Are logistic companies not working due to covids? 150 years and we have not learned to depend on one area of the country to manufacture things. Is this due to Covids or the unions?

Production cannot keep up with demand.

Massive demand plus Feds bought up many dedicated lines of production during the Obama administration. Even the smallest shops here in Florida (like Gorilla right near me) are at least 75% dedicated to Federal production.

I heard today from a range officer that a copper mine in Chile that produces a lot of the material for shell casings has been shut down by COVID since April.

It was somewhat of a perfect storm
Most ammo companies start filing military and LEO contract in the 1st Qtr of the year.
Lead is getting harder to import and isBy any state side production that I am aware
COViD shutdown happened putting many ammo production on hold
Huge first time gun buyer when riots started and purchased ammo for said guns.

Federal and other big companies are running 3 shifts per day to crank out ammo. Things is they can only pump out so much and demand seems to have surpassed even after sandy hook. In other words we’re talking an extremely long time till supply catches up. Welcome to the thunder dome.
Learned my lesson after sandy hook to never be caught flat footed again.

For sure. I bought and sold a lot of C&R stuff as well as ar’s and ak’s at that time. At the time it hit, I had sold all but one of my AR’s and a handful of mags. Yeah talk about caught with pants down. Took almost two years to get close to where I stopped restocking. I Still remember the AWB Obama tried to jam through right after. I don’t know if a lot of the new gun owners knew how close we were to getting jobbed.

Get a new rifle or change the upper. .22-.26 a round right now for the 7.62x39
I paid .26 a round for their 8m3 fragable round. Their fmj is cheaper. About the same cost as a soft point which has great mushroom ballistics.
