I mean India has always been pretty fricked up. Poor sanitation, hygiene, over crowding, disease, crime, rape, caste system. Covid...maybe, but really they have plenty of other problems too.

I am an Indian who live in USA. Yep India is absolutely fricked up right now. My parents still live in Calcutta. I had two close friends from Calcutta who both live here in USA who lost their dads in the last 10 days. I right now have 3 close and 2 distant relatives in India with Covid. Some in hospitals. Have a few college buddies who are also positive. Both the houses next to my parents house have covid patients right now.
The double mutant strain is extremely fast spreading. Health system had collapsed. The lack of basic healthcare support like oxygen is what is driving the high mortality rates.
I just read today that there are at least two Americans who died in India even though they were fully vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine.
People are literally dumping dead bodies in Ganges in some north Indian states.
The double mutant strain is extremely fast spreading. Health system had collapsed. The lack of basic healthcare support like oxygen is what is driving the high mortality rates.
I just read today that there are at least two Americans who died in India even though they were fully vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine.
People are literally dumping dead bodies in Ganges in some north Indian states.

All this is true. But that is true pretty much for most of the third world (except maybe for overcrowding). Still this latest wave is just unimaginably horrifying and will create a lot of problem for a lot of families.

The real count is atleast 40-50 times more. What is happening is if a death certificate says the cause of death is covid, cremation is becoming extremely complicated. So most people are getting death certificate issued with something else as the cause.
In Hindu tradition, you are supposed to cremate the body as soon as you can. Preferably within a day.

It’s not you and it’s certainly not your fault but I’m sorry, I just don’t believe hyperbolic stories about Covid anymore. Until I see it with my own eyes I assume it’s bullshite. No offense to you or yours and I hope you understand.

Much of what i listed as historically fricked up about India also provides a fertile environment for extreme Covid deaths.
Poor Sanitation: Check
Poor Hygiene: Check
Over Crowding (Increased spread): Check
Disease (Preexisting conditions): Check
Crime: Nope
Rape: Probably not
Caste system (reduced, if any access to medical care): Check
So yeah India is probably going to see a very high death rate. India is ready made for this to be everything they claimed it would be here.
China also is, but they hide it well and can kill entire villages and pretend they never existed and nobody asks questions.

Some of this is just numbers and base rates. There are 1.4 billion Indians and 77 million have diabetes which makes you vulnerable to COVID19. So even with a low percentage of deaths it’s still just a massive amount of people who will die with exposure. If they shut the country down more people would die of starvation than of COVID so they have no choice but to let it play out until herd immunity is reached.
