Expecting more states to follow...

The California State Assembly on Thursday passed a bill that would require all presidential candidates to release their tax returns prior to being placed on the state's ballot.

The bill, called the Presidential Tax Transparency and Accountability Act, passed the state assembly on a 42-18 vote and will now head to the state Senate for a concurrence vote before being sent to the Governor for his signature.

"President Trump's blatant disregard for the tradition of releasing tax returns is dangerous to our democracy," Senator Mike McGuire (D), one of the authors of the bill, said in a statement. "For decades, every President has put their personal beliefs aside and put our country first and released their returns. "

"SB 149 helps to reestablish desperately needed transparency in the White House, and we are looking forward to seeing the Governor's signature on the bill."

The bill would require all presidential candidates to release the last five years of their tax returns in order to appear on the California ballot.

Guess what dickheads...

Remember when states tried to put term limits on Congress and the SCt looked at that Constitution thingy and the qualifications for office in there?

Expect the same outcome in response to this bullshite.

Illegal. There's nothing in the Constitution about a candidate being required to release tax returns.

Federal election qualifications are the jurisdiction of the Federal government.

Federal tax returns are not the property of California and are also legally protected by various privacy statutes.

If California wanted to release any California state income tax records on the candidates, they could, but outside of that, this won't legally stand up.

States cannot impose their own pet regulations on federal elections. Imagine if the State of Maine randomly said all Presidential candidates must visit the state of Maine at least twice a year in order to qualify for their ballot or some shite.

That wouldn't fly and neither will this.

State's rights? If it's not spelled out in the Constitution isn't it supposed to fall under states rights?

What difference would it make for Trump anyways? He could not put himself on the ballot in California and it wouldn't effect his EC outcome anyways.

Dems just keep looking like whiny vags every time they pull these stupid stunts. I can't wait for this to expose one of their candidates, though.

So hypothetically if the state of Arkansas said that all Presidential candidate were required to shop at Wal Mart you think that would pass Constitutional muster? Because there's nothing about Wal Mart in the constitution.

What if the state of Wyoming said all candidates must be at least 6 feet tall. There's nothing about height in the Constitution either.

States have broad authority over how STATE elections are conducted. They have much more limited authority over how Federal elections are conducted, most notably around qualifications.

The qualifications for federal office are absolutely in the Constitution.

The qualifications for President are clearly spelled out in the constitution and releasing Muh tax returns aren't one of those qualifications.

I'm going to ask Graves to draft a bill to require presidential candidates to release their college applications and transcripts.

Pretty over the top hypotheticals. I simply asked a question. This will go over about as well as the mayor of Little Rock publicly trying to court Amazon to build that new HQ in Little Rock. It's good for a laugh.

But hey. I just realized that this might not be a bad idea after all.

I mean, if California decides to not put someone on the ballot because they don't release their tax returns, you can pretty much take it to the bank that their electoral votes won't count.

So. OK. Go ahead Cali

This country survived for ~150 years before income taxes were even a thing. Those guys were a real danger to democracy.

That famous American tradition dating all the way back to the 1970's. We cannot allow our politicians to violate such a sacrosanct tradition.
