California Gov. Gavin Newsom will sign a sweeping order on Wednesday putting an executive moratorium on California's troubled death penalty, thus ordering a reprieve for the 737 people on death row. The action suspends any further executions in California as long as Newsom is governor, his office said. But only California voters can repeal the death penalty, something they rejected narrowly three years ago.

Gotta love politicians who say "screw you" to voters.

California hasn’t executed anyone in a long time

Why does this upset you?

Bold move!

California hasn’t executed anyone since 2006.

Pure virtue signaling.

And judges who two days before an election strike down a proposal that has been legally presented to be put on the ballot but lo and behold, some idiot judge says not so fast.

I don't like the death penalty. In Texas I know of at least one man who was wrongly put to death for a crime someone else committed. And this isn't a racial thing; the person executed for a fatal arson case was a white man from Corsicana.

CA can be a very nice place to live. Expensive, though.

As is taking someone's life without a really justifiable cause.

San Diego

It's not as crazy here as it is in LA or SF, but its still left wing. And there are so many hispanics here. I know many of them are legal citizens but its truly like living in another country. I don't see many white people around.

I'm against the death penalty, but I can't help but be deeply troubled by states that wring their hands over punishment of the most violent and dangerous killers while sanctioning the most radical and indiscriminate killing of innocents.

I agree it was kind of a kooky prosecution in the Willingham case.

But, I'm still not sure he didn't do it. He wasn't a choir boy (although I concede that is not grounds for execution) and I'm not sure I would have voted to put him to death - but I didn't sit on the jury and I didn't see all of the evidence in context.

Let me put it this way - I'm a father of 3 myself - when my kids were young - like 4 and under like these and the house caught fire while we were all in it? If I lived through that I would have been some kind of fricked up. Burnt up, smoke inhalation - the firefighters would have had to drag me out of there while my children were still in there and there was any chance to save them.

Period.
