Building these ventilators isn't going to be quick.

Medical equipment requires specially certified parts, made from certified materials.
They may have to settle for lower standards and manufacture some cheaper, throw away ventilators.

All options are on the table. They are even converting ventilators normally only allowed for use during surgery by anesthesiologists.

Or, if nothing else, have them certified for this crisis only and then recycle/rebuild them to certification when this is all over, so the investment isn't a total loss.
Those "certified" can be stored until the next crisis and we won't have "Muh ventilators!" next time.

Cuomo thinks if Trump forces companies to manufacturer them, they can staff up and change over equipment to do so and he’ll have his 30,000 vents next week.

Don't ambulances have ventilators?

They are cutting through red tape in these situations.

We dumped a shite load of essential medical equipment downgrading in Afghanistan. Just saying.

the ventilators will need to be destroyed after this is over. else, the manufacturer and doctor be sued into oblivion because it didn't work well enough... or quick enough... or who the hell knows.

I know there is a guy that created a ventilator that can be 3D printed in a few days. Not sure of well it functions but the point is we, as a country, can rise to the occasion and will.

I worked for a private equity firm where we purchased two ventilator companies. Many of the components (particularly housings/plastic components) were sourced from Chinese molding companies. To make matters worse, due to a limited market need we would only order components in quantities of 500 to a 1000 at a time. The lead time to get plastics was 4-6 weeks. We also sourced blower motors from Japan with a similar lead time.
Now we need 50k of them right now... The standard supply chain is not going to work. We need some serious innovation in this country to start today.

Come on, don’t you remember the high quality of the FEMA trailers after Katrina?
It’s super easy to ramp up production and keep quality.

I think they could find a way to use regular air compressors, from the hardware stores. Filter the hell out of the air, adapt a regulator and control system and go with it. An emergency is an emergency.

Something like that exists. 3M makes it.

this will all be over long before they build even 25% of the ventilators requested
then there will be tens of thousands of ventilators sent to scrap metal because no one needs or wants them any more
after the stimulus package, it will be the biggest waste of money and resources in this whole crisis
then the lawsuits will start because grampa died and his ventilator didnt have the surgeon generals stamp of approval and inspection sticker

They can make all the vents they want, if you don’t have the staff to run them, what’s the point...
Does the average person know what the requirements are for a person on a ventilator..?
It not like just putting a person on “breathing machine” and they’re on cruise control..
Staff needed...
Pulmonologist
Respiratory Therapist
ICU nurse
X-ray tech
I’ll add in radiologist for daily X-ray reports..
Is just the start..

Can a person only monitor 1 ventilator at a time?

Yes basically. It’s not like a telemetry unit where you sit and watch a monitor..
There’s blood gasses involved, airway maintenance, suctioning, x-ray interpretation, nebulizers and a few other things.. And that’s just the respiratory therapist job..
I was assigned 6 pt’s on vents this morning... Which is a very large workload..
I’m still here going at it...

If you saved 95 out of 100 patients that otherwise would have died, while killing the other 5, a lot of people on this board would tell you that we can't do that. They would say we need to follow our standard procedure.
