So maybe the lawyers can clarify, but it is my understanding that criminal charges against a sitting president are unlikely. So wouldn't he have to be impeached then removed from office first?

Then he wouldn't be able to pardon himself, right?

Trump should go 'nuclear' if Meuller/His Hillary Hack Attornerys come back with all manner of supposed 'crimes' on Trump per the 'Martha Stewart/Scooter Libby' version...while totally ignoring (REAL OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE) Hillary, Comey, Lynch et al outright illegality.

Trump should declare that he WILL appoint an SC to investigate Meuller and the whole Dem cartel, if they ignore these crimes. And he should pardon - up front - any bs 'indictments' that Meuller refers.

Call their bluff...and call on Trump Nation to back him up.

Meuller has one shot. The old days of double standard applications of Law are gone. He'd better be TOTALLY HONEST....or hell will break loose.

But why O why would MAGA have to pardon himself? After all, he has said himself, he has done NOTHING wrong!

Even Nixon refused to pardon himself, as was discussed on "Madcow".

How can his lawyers build a defense about the scope of the investigation, then argue for a scope exponentially broader?

And why would Mueller investigate that when his own justice department can?

He can pardon all of his co-conspirators, maybe except one or two just to give the public the blood they crave, then resign and let Pence pardon him. Basically, just like Nixon did. They've handled everything else about this situation the same way Nixon did, so why stop now?

He should just pardon everyone and be done with it. Election isn't for 3 and half years, nobody but dems will care

Everything I have read concludes that there is a lot of precedent that criminal charges against a sitting president are probably impossible to litigate.

So in respect to the president, impeachment seems like the only outcome for removal.

Now the random people in his orbit? That is really questionable and would certainly be enormously precedent breaking to try and pre-empt people you are associated with under a potential criminal investigation with a pardon.

The fact they are looking at this probably doesn't bode well for the "mah Russians is a hoax" crowd.

Though they will certainly tune into Hannity and Rush to tell them how best to try.

I know these are just regulations, as Ford didn't abide by them, unless these were created afterwards. However, the DOJ requires a 5 year waiting period from the conviction.

RULES GOVERNING PETITIONS FOR EXECUTIVE CLEMENCY

quote:

No petition for pardon should be filed until the expiration of a waiting period of at least five years after the date of the release of the petitioner from confinement or, in case no prison sentence was imposed, until the expiration of a period of at least five years after the date of the conviction of the petitioner.

Have him leave and Pence becomes President. Have Pence pardon him and name him Vice President. After that Pence resigns and has Trump name him VP.
