Bill Gates says he and other rich people should pay 'significantly higher' taxes

Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates has said wealthy individuals such as himself should be made to pay substantially higher taxes.
Mr Gates, who is worth over $90bn (£64bn), said despite the fact he has "paid more taxes...than anyone else" he should be required to fork out more by the government.
Speaking to CNN in an interview on Sunday, he said: “I need to pay higher taxes.
”I've paid more taxes, over $10bn, than anyone else, but the government should require the people in my position to pay significantly higher taxes.”
Someone needs to tell Mr. Gates that he does not have to use an accountant to do his taxes. The gov't does not require him to take deductions. That is optional. He also has the right to check a box that will allow all rich people like him to pay more taxes, if they want.
Warren Buffet claims he does not pay enough in taxes either. He can pay more taxes too, if they feel they don't pay enough. They are being hypocrites when they say these things. WE need to mail them a tax form and highlight the box which they are allowed to check so they can pay the amount they think the gov't should require them to pay.
Why hasn't anyone asked them the question, "Why don't you pay the amount you think the gov't should make you pay each year? Also, write a check to the gov't in the amount you think you should have paid in previous years with interest."
How many people think they'd write that check?

Yeah, he's dealing in false platitudes.

Nothing is stopping him from writing a check

Get a flat tax, and they will....

If he’s worth $90 billion and only paid $10 billion in taxes he’s right. He should be paying more. That’s next to nothing tax-wise. It’s why people should squirrel away every dollar they can into investments. He’s taxed mostly on capital gains which are taxed at 15%. That puts him in the same bracket as someone who makes $12,000 a year. Think about that. Keep in mind the poor guy is the one who also paid payroll taxes and thus pays an effective tax rate that is MUCH higher than Gates. When people say the rich pay more than anyone else they are really talking about the rich who earn their income. Doctors, lawyers and such. They’re the ones getting the shaft. The truly wealthy pay extremely low tax rates. It isn’t about tax shelters or brilliant accountants. It’s an open system available to us all. It sounds silly but save those pennies and invest, invest, invest even if it’s a few bucks at a time.

He can, but personally, I'm not a fan of state sponsored stealing.
They should ask for it, and we should be able to say, GFY...

nothing is stopping him from doing that now, what's he waiting for?

In Gates defense ( and Buffet's who has said similar things) one person bailing water out of the ship is just a waste of time because the ship is going down no matter what. But if everyone is required to bail then the ship might be saved.
I can't think of any nefarious angle Gates could be working by saying he needs to be taxed more. Just feels like himself and everyone in his bracket should pay more.

That would be more as in relative to the rates others pay. I take no position on what we should be paying to begin with. At least not as it relates to the OP.

More virtue signaling meaningless bullshite
Pay enough taxes so you are no longer rich to the point where we have to hinge on your every word bill, then we’ll talk

I'm all for it. If someone says he himself should be paying more taxes, who am I to stop him. Knock yourself out Bill. Write that check, write one to me while you're at it being you looking to throw money away.

This coming from a man who has made sure that he will not pay any estate tax.

You do know that a person earning 12k pays around 100 bucks a year in federal income tax, right?
Posted on 2/20/18 at 5:07 am to Dawgfanman
Not sure why that has to do with anything. The actual amount is relative and that $100 is a hell of a lot of money to a person who only makes 12k a year.

How many times do we need to tax money at income like rates to satisfy you?

No time right now to find the link where I read this(could be the same as the OP) but I read that a survey showed 68% of millionaires felt they should pay more. If 68% of them voluntarily paid more, it wouldn't be one person bailing water out of the ship.

Because he claimed the person paid a much higher “effective rate” than Bill Gates. They don’t, even when considering payroll “taxes”.

I think this is just his way of laughing at everyone who works for wages. He’s basically telling us that not only is he mega rich, but he’s been fricking over the government too!
He gives a shite load to charity though so why does he think it would be better spent with some bureaucrat in fedgov.
