A question for you "China hands" out there.

Considering China's financial woes, what's the status of the Belt and Road program? Are the projects going on as planned?

TIA

The plan seems for China to demand repayment or require deals on a country’s resources when it hits the fan.

I think the program might continue but things could easily be slowing and I don’t think we’d really know.

It'd be interesting if other countries begin to retaliate on China for not holding up their end of the bargain. Wouldn't that be funny?

China has too much capacity in their state owned enterprises, particularly steel and concrete. But they cant just lay off 10s of millions of people without huge unrest (yes they killed millions in the past, but this generation has tasted capitalism and this aint Mao's china). So the solution was belt and road.

They offer loans to 3rd world countries, who then pay the companies china is subsidizing, to build the ports and roads, etc.

As some have mentioned, this aint working out so well. Venezeuela is an example. They subsidized companies to build there, and then loaned Venezuela money for the projects. Now they have paid out billions in subsidies to the chinese companies to build AND are owed billions by Venezuela. The projects have stopped, and Venezuela cant pump enough oil to pay them back.

In Sri Lanka they actually took the port they had built as collateral.

The keystone to the project is Pakistan, where they have now projected loans of up to 60 billion and counting. Its become a real mess, the payments are doubtful and the projects have waned. In addition one of the main arteries is projected to go through Kashmir which is causing all sorts of problems with India, who claims the land along with Pakistan.

You must remember not to think like a westerner. Many of the leaders of these countries dont care if they default, they have already gotten their kickback from the chinese construction companies, they could care less if the chinese seize the project or confiscate their natural resources.

What I find amusing, and NEVER discussed by the msm. If you break the projects down by money spent on various projects. The number one item, power plants.....coal fired power plants. So not only are they the worst polluters in the world, they are ensuring the rest of the 3rd world will pollute along with them....and they are the darlings of the paris accord....dont forget to stop using those plastic straws.
