The White House will issue a memo Tuesday offering to pay federal workers who don't want to return to the office through Sept. 30, as long as they resign by Feb. 6, an administration official tells Axios.

Why it matters: It's an acceleration in President Trump's already unprecedented purge of the federal workforce.

What they're saying: "The government-wide email being sent today is to make sure that all federal workers are on board with the new administration's plan to have federal employees in office and adhering to higher standards. We're five years past COVID and just 6 percent of federal employees work full-time in office. That is unacceptable," a senior administration official tells Axios.

The White House expects 5% to 10% of federal employees to accept the offer, which would potentially mean hundreds of thousands of people.

The administration projects the buyouts could ultimately save taxpayers up to $100 billion a year.

Zoom out: The offer applies to all full-time federal employees, except for military personnel, the Postal Service, and those working in immigration enforcement or national security.

Between the lines: Many federal workers are already feeling scared about the administration's crackdown on DEI, its return-to-office policy and the effort to reclassify civil servants.

Vivek also mentioned 2 year severance. I think there will be a round 2 of this.

we're talking a ONCE IN A MILLENIUM change to our entire government.

if we have to buyout these motherfrickers to keep the streamroller going, so be it.

I’d bet more than 5-10% will take it. There are tons of people approaching retirement and as long as they’d still receive their retirement plan, they’ll be gone. Then only God himself knows how many with TDS will quit out of protest.

Way too generous.

A month’s severance, at most. Ending March 6th. After that, all bets are off and the first round of layoffs begin. Should’ve taken the deal as offered.

This is a bullshite statistic and a meaningless statistic. Elon runs multiple companies and never has to report for duty, yet he thinks other people can't be productive unless they are herded into an office like cattle. It's just a moronic proposition and insulting to people. Judge people on the work they do and whether their position is necessary.

If they are forced to provide office space for all of these people, it will end up costing us more money. This entire effort goes after people at the bottom of the food chain. These are not the people that make the policies that make govt so inefficient. Elon has zero understanding of how govt works.

If you start targeting this huge chunk of govt workers at the bottom of the food chain, you will get destroyed in the midterm elections. Dems will campaign on bringing them back with back pay and buy their votes. They'll take the House and the Senate and impeachment 3.0 will begin.

Give a 1yr severance / bonus, and retire people. That's a good deal for them and a good deal for the taxpayer.

Why would they do that? They can draw that much from unemployment. That's not a deal.
