The Appeal

1/3 of the entire police budget. Texas has its own Portland/Seattle problem on the horizon.

The Austin City Council has approved a budget that cuts police funding by about a third. It's one of the most significant cuts to a major city's police budget since drugs killed George Floyd.

Austin is what happens when you actively court all that stupidity from the West coast into your state. You get infected with the dumbass.

So, what cities are looking for PD? Seems that there will be a lot of people leaving Seattle, Portland. NYC, Austin, and elsewhere soon.

Hey you Union guys in the oil and gas industry, do you really think the Democrats are going to stop with defunding the police?

We're gonna put a lot of coal miners out of work! - Democrat nominee for POTUS 2016

Do you really think Democrats were gonna stop with coal?

Very sad what has happened to Austin. It is lost and I’m afraid all of Texas will eventually be.

It amazes me the such a few people (like 12) can make such huge decisions that impacts so many people that disagree...

I bet 80% of the people of Austin do not support defunding the police...

How long until Austin can’t police itself and they start demanding the Texas Rangers help out?

It’s happened in NOLA where they fricked up so badly that they can’t keep NOPD staffed and the LA State Troopers are expected to help out.

Aaaaaand there goes Austin as a viable city to live in. So much work to build it up and it’s going to be another Houston-esque ghetto shithole in 5 years or less

That’s fricking incredible...

Cutting 1/3 of any budget is a disaster waiting to happen. Hopefully the chief and others begin resigning.

Under the joint proposal, over $20 million will be immediately cut from APD’s budget and reallocated elsewhere. Another almost $80 million will be taken from APD’s budget by moving certain civilian functions, like dispatch and the forensics lab, out of APD, though that money will still be spent on funding those civilian functions, just not within the police department. And an additional $50 million will be taken from the police budget and put into a “Reimagine Safety Fund” in an effort to transition money away from the police department and toward alternative forms of public safety, like employing park rangers instead of park police.

Sounds like it's another paper move designed to appease their base without moving that much out of enforcement. 80 million out of 150 is just shifted out of the purview of the police. They will still keep all the support apparatus intact.

Austin is the only place I’ve seen a person shoot up heorine right on the main tourist drag in broad daylight.

Local told me that the cops aren’t allowed to do much.

Then 80% of the people in Austin should go out and start kicking arse! Conservative style.
