New marijuana legislation is headed to Kasim Reed’s desk after passing in the Atlanta City Council. Over 50 public speakers managed to convince City Council on the new piece of legislation, which unanimously passed today, around 5 p.m.

The legislation reduces the penalty of carrying less than one ounce of weed from a max fine of $1000 and up to 6 months in jail, to a new max fine of $75 and no jail time . The legislation, introduced by Councilman and mayoral candidate Kwanza Hall, passed through committee hearings on Friday, Sept. 27 after a similar measure was denied in April.

Hall said he hopes that these measures would reduce the racial disparities in marijuana arrests in Atlanta, and would condemn less minor offenders to jail. Hall’s office cited that 92 percent of people jailed for marijuana use were African-Americans, versus the 54 percent African-American population in the city of Atlanta.

He also said the punishment does not fit the crime.
“Our current policy destroys lives. It tears apart families, causes students to lose scholarships, and renders a generation of young people unable to get a job. We waste millions of taxpayer dollars on arresting, trying and jailing marijuana offenders.” Hall said.

One of the issues that seems to massively confuse a segment of conservatives, for sure.

Like fix our economy. My a-hole dad lost his job in the recession and even he won't listen to me that this is the way to solve most of our problems

Yes, people who feel that weed should be decriminalized/legalized think it will "solve most of our problems".

So from an enforcement perspective this proposed legislation has an impact on the Atlanta city police only, right?

The GA state police will still enforce GA state and federal law concerning marijuana laws and the Atlanta city police will still have the option of charging people with state and federal laws, right?

I really hate the "tax and regulate" dolts. Overregulation hurt the industry here badly. Took damn near two years to open the first store.

I'm sure the atlanta cops don't mind losing out on arresting potheads. All you gotta do is wait 6 months and these potheads will have all moved on to heroin

I don't know if it should be legal. But a person should not face jail time for weed. It should be treated similar to a traffic ticket. Fine the person, confiscate it, and send them on their way.

“Legalizing” while keeping black market makes no sense. Legalize it and then allow dispensaries to open.
