Do you agree with Gov. Abbott’s approach?

From a politically philosophical standpoint, the current epidemic is separating the wheat from the chaff, in terms of illuminating people’s self-governance beliefs.

AP News
quote:

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Mayors are shuttering bars, governors are closing schools and President Donald Trump says avoid groups larger than 10 people. Rapidly across the U.S., the coronavirus pandemic is thrusting leaders at every level into hard decisions about where people can go, and how many at a time.

But not Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, the chief executive in a state of 29 million people.

Texas has reported more than 80 cases of the virus and three deaths related to the virus that causes COVID-19. But even as more and more governors impose sweeping restrictions, Abbott has held firm on deferring decisions about school and business closures to local authorities across 254 counties. It has left the Republican as a major holdout among the dwindling ranks of governors who have defended having a patchwork of different public health restrictions, which in Texas has varied starkly even between neighboring cities as big as Dallas and Fort Worth.

quote:

“They know their communities better than anybody else does,” Abbott said. “We’re dealing with something, however, that is not just statewide in scope, not just nationwide in scope, but is worldwide in scope.”

The mayors of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are begging the governor to shut the beaches down in their locales... Once that is done, they will be screaming for their bailout of local government...

I think we’ll know more to be able to judge the prudence of this in a few months.

Yep (the photo essay in the story mentions that).

Which is the point of the article: He’s letting the locals decide.

ETA: They’re not exactly “shutdown.”
Patrons aren’t dining inside the restaurants; they’re doing the pick-up thing.

I hope this helps us get rid of Big Government Kay Ivey here in Alabama, but I do realize that any Democrat would be worse.

I mean Texas is huge. I am not sure the desolate parts of west Texas need to act the same as Dallas, Houston, Austin, etc.

Uh yeah, that's the point, idiot, he's deferring to local government. Pretty much the backbone of what our government was founded to do.

I've seen a lot of liberals giving some praise to Abbott right now. He's doing a great job imo.

Most of the bigger counties are following the same playbook.

The Dallas County judge was whining about how we don't have state laws requiring businesses to provide mandatory sick leave.

Now fairly reliable conservative Tarrant County, marginally conservative Collin County, and very conservative Denton County are also shutting down anything and everything.

He probably doesn’t have the POWER to order jack shite.

Texas has one of the weakest Governor offices in the country, as most of the power is instead with the legislature.

Contrast this with the dictatorial powers of the LA governor.

They just want cover. This way it wasn’t them that had to shut it down.
