As a Bama fan, I hate this. You should too.

Why should everybody in the state of Ga and Al pay taxes except for college players getting millions in NIL?

Alabama lawmakers have cooked up a plan to recruit more athletes to the state and win more championships, by tempting top prospects with tax breaks on the money they take in for name, image and likeness.

Rep. Joe Lovvorn, R-Auburn, introduced HB240, the Competitive Edge NIL Tax Cut Act, in the Alabama House of Representatives on Tuesday. This would exempt student athletes from paying state income tax on the money they earn through NIL deals.

“As NIL continues to change the landscape of college sports, the state must work to foster an environment that helps our schools land America’s top recruits,” Rep. Lovvorn said in a statement. “Exempting NIL earnings from state income tax gives Alabama a competitive edge, leading to more students receiving a quality education here and more championships coming home to Alabama.”

This is the kind of stupidity that should piss everybody off.

It is. I read one article where the people who wrote the bill in each state stated "We have to compete with Tennessee."

Nobody pays state taxes in Tn! Very much so different than what they are attempting.

It is ... EXCEPT ... IIRC Tennessee and Florida have no state income tax.

I’m in favor of tax breaks, especially if they’re for me.

Besides, I rather let people keep more of their own money because the government has proven it will go to waste.

I actually get satisfied knowing that many of these players come from families who have paid no taxes for generations and now have a major life lesson when taxes come. Granted they still need to pay federal taxes, but the more pain they feel the more they will dislike taxes

No no. Get it friggin right. Not a single citizen of those states pay state income tax.

You want to "compete", then do it right and end it for ALL CITIZENS of those states.

Money has ruined pro football, money has ruined college football. This is just another nail in the coffin of a sport I have already buried.

Not sure I have ever complained about baseball scholarships. Not even sure how this is even relevant to the topic.

Texas has no state income tax, so it does put Bama and LSU at a disadvantage. Instead of doing tax breaks for NIL, just eliminate the entire state income tax.

Yeah, I didn't think it would ever reach the point where I begin to hate college football more than pro football but I think I'm there now. I'm about to give up on sports completely except for the NHL.
