Insurance is going to get so expensive on manual driving cars it’s going to force pretty much everyone to self driving quicker than you would think.
No it won’t. Less accidents = less risk. Results.. lower insurance. Same reason insurance gets cheaper when you get older.
If insurance would be higher then... why is it not sky high now? 99.99 percent of the cars on the road now are not self driving. If there was a reason to have high insurance on self driving cars.. why not now?
What you or your source wants is for the insurance companies to pool together and penalize people with these cars with punitive charges. You know.... the same idea in reverse with Obamacare that has not worked as it was sold to the ignorant masses. And you believed this was a good idea that was going to work too didn’t you?
You will not get all insurance companies to sign on to it as long as there is a market. You see.. if your theory was correct. All antique cars with no ABS, no airbags, etc would have sky high insurance. They don’t.

This is such a low IQ post formed by someone who is obviously completely ignorant on the subject. Self-driving cars will eliminate over 99.9% of traffic accidents and traffic deaths, will lower transportation costs by over 90%, increase productivity by a ton and decrease commutes drastically but you don’t like the idea of them...
And eliminate 100's of thousands of jobs and force socialism on the country (world) in a huge way

I’m not a fan for several reasons. First I just like doing shite. I’ve Ubered once in my life(from the airport to manhattan), I don’t use any of the grocery apps, or car side delivery, and I barely use amazon. I totally get get idea of making your life easier but at what point does everything become TOO easy and convenient? Personally I think a lot of, if not most people are using their increased time for stupid shite like scrolling Instagram instead of meaningful or productive ventures. I mean at what point do we just become lazy as hell and incapable of doing things for ourselves?
I also don’t think this technology will be rolled out as quickly as many believe as it will have to make it down to the lower socio economic members of society before it becomes truly widespread.
Finally I get motion sickness anytime I’m not the one driving so I guess I’ll be moving to Wyoming or wherever they won’t have these things for the 40-50 years I hopefully have left.

I have witnessed multiple tech revolutions in my lifetime and there has never been one that caused the same sense of unease/rejection as self-driving vehicles and AI. I think we may have hit the point of tech innovation saturation.
As someone who drives alot, I am 100% behind self driving cars. The time wasted behind the wheel can be spent doing more productive things.
Then downtime for the car while you are busy, can be used to shuffle other people around and make you money.
That not even getting into the fact that some drunk or texting idiot can take your family out anytime. Self driving cars will increase safety, productivity, and the mess of commuting that people deal with every day.

The point is as more and more people switch to self driving, the vast majority of accidents (and fault) will come from people who aren’t in self driving cars.
The biggest question that will come with self driving revolution is what happens with law enforcement and smaller local governments when they begin to lose out on all of the traffic tickets that generate so much revenue

News flash.
Yes...much of society is this lazy!

If you have to rely on traffic tickets, you aren't doing something right.

And again. If it was necessitated that insurance be high only if you drive the car yourself.. it would be high now. Your example of non self driving cars being the high risk leading to higher insurance is refuted by the past when ABS brakes, airbags, etc were made standard. The insurance on the older cars did not increase due to the mandate on the newer. You can insure one now and it will not be expensive.
The market will not allow a total pool of vehicles who have less claims and less risk to have higher insurance. Won’t happen. There is also no end of accidents with self driving vehicles. Someone not in a self driving vehicle, that is paying proper attention, will be less likely to hit a deer, dog, etc. A self driving car will not be able to anticipate a deer standing off the roadway as an immediate hazard. So they will be required to be insured. If they were flawless, they would not be.
Since the claim is there would be far less traffic accidents, and you put them in the same pool as people who drive their own vehicles, cost to insure goes down.
Health insurance companies push healthy living. Why? If everyone was healthy, their risk decreases. Their costs go down. They can, if necessary to compete, lower rates and remain profitable. But as far as employer sponsored plans go... does the fat guy in the cubicle next to the marathon runner pay a ton more than the marathon runner? If they have yearly health checks.. they may pay some more.. but they are not priced completely out. And in plans where there are no checks... they are exactly the same. Same result would be for a public full of self driving vehicles.

I for one welcome the change. Now people can bury their face in their smartphone without endangering everyone else.

I hope this doesn’t ever come to fruition. Especially the part where nobody has a personal vehicle and relies on a vehicle to come and pick you up. I really don’t want to have to schedule my trips to every single destination I want to go to. This is so Orwellian that it makes me sick.

Do tell us how these self-driving cars will arbitrate decisions among thousands of cars on LBJ here in Dallas AND have everybody go along with what they decide.
and all in only 7.75 years because they were "10 years away" in late 2016

I read an insurance study recently and the experts expected auto rates to keep going up for 10 yrs or so as repairs keep going up. However the study also said that the nationwide auto premium in40 yrs would be half what it is now with more cars on the road

The male gearhead that works on his cars and likes to make improvements, that also thoroughly enjoys being behind the wheel, will be the biggest hurdle in the way of the self-driving car.
I expect the amount and accessibility to tracks will increase. Over my lifetime I have seen a huge increase in hobbyists at the track, the biggest increase has been at the road tracks.
Cars have gotten so quick and so fast that you can begin to exploit the capabilities of even a minivan on the roads. When I was in high school and first began racing a street "legal" car that trapped near 140 in the 1/4 was wicked fast, today that is more like the 1/8 trap for similar quick cars.

So far they’ve done a pretty good job causing accidents. Why would transportation costs not only go down but do so by 90%? That number sounds pulled out of thin air. And does the reference to commutes being decreased mean commute times will go down? Is this based on faster travel speeds? This all sounds rather pie in the sky. As for productivity going up, that means even more Americans losing their jobs to technology and robotics. The job market is going to be slashed drastically over the next several years so not everything associated with driverless vehicles is peaches and cream.

Risk should theoretically go down as roads get safer, so why would insurance get more expensive?
