Arizonans are attacking self driving cars. Thoughts?
Video of AZ man pulling a gun out on a self-driving car

I do not like the idea of self driving cars, especially Google cars with cameras photographing everything.

Is society going to become this lazy?

Where will the liability fall in a self-driving car accident? The human (if present) owner or the manufacturer?

We don't need this.

It's happening. Best to deal with it.

Liability will fall where it always has: whoever has the most money.

It’s really gonna be something else when the robots are making self driving cars after they’ve killed all the humans off the face of the earth. Good times are coming

This is such a low IQ post formed by someone who is obviously completely ignorant on the subject. Self-driving cars will eliminate over 99.9% of traffic accidents and traffic deaths, will lower transportation costs by over 90%, increase productivity by a ton and decrease commutes drastically but you don’t like the idea of them...

We really don't know any of that for sure yet.

There are numerous "moral" and reactionary decisions the average driver makes on a daily basis that will be very hard to replicate with AI, especially when there are still non-self driving cars still on the road with them.

If 100% of the cars on the road were self-driven your post would probably be accurate, but some people enjoy driving too much to ever be 100%. Even 20 years after the self-driving car is perfected there will be those that can't afford them. 50 years after and people will be driving old cars for the thrill of it, like muscle cars now, or switching to manual mode on their newer cars to experience the joy of driving.

The male gearhead that works on his cars and likes to make improvements, that also thoroughly enjoys being behind the wheel, will be the biggest hurdle in the way of the self-driving car.

It's actually DARPA's fault if you really look into it it probably doesn't make sense if you're in Louisiana but we need them desperately in the big cities.

Insurance is going to get so expensive on manual driving cars it’s going to force pretty much everyone to self driving quicker than you would think...manual driving is only going to be available as a “luxury”

The key is going to be if they can retrofit self driving technology onto current cars or if everyone is going to need to buy a new self driving vehicle.

Cash for clunkers is going to be child’s play compared to the amount of cars that are going to become obsolete in the near future

It’s also going to make owning a vehicle even less necessary for a lot of people. Think Uber/Lyft, but you’re just requesting a self driving car to bring you where you need to go but it’ll be faster and cheaper.

Days like today, I take the top off my Jeep, load up the Golden Retriever's and ride wherever the frick I want to go.
And there's no one that can take that away from me.

I doubt it will be such a dramatic shift. Most of the self driving tech will be slowly implemented - lane keeping, breaking assistance, vehicle avoidance, etc. will all show up as addons as new cars come out each year.

Sure, some companies will be early adopters to full self-driving like Tesla, but those will be few and far between.

Also, I’d be curious to see what happens with insurance as the total number of wrecks decrease. If the total number of claims drops by say 50% I’d think that the insurance companies would spread some of those saving around, not just give all of the discounts to the self driving cars. They’ll get the lion’s share, but as long as a significant number of people are driving “dumb” cars then they’ll want to be able to market to them.

It’s possible that current “dumb” car insurance will at worst remain the same. After all, those cars/drivers wouldn’t be causing any more wrecks than they are now (likely causing fewer because the smart cars will be better at avoiding them).

Just my thoughts.

Once things get really get going with self driving cars look for groups like MADD and small towns and sheriffs to fight them hard (along with their associated courts). There’s a lot of money in speeding tickets and DWIs that will go away.

It is one reason for the desperate push to create soft “Soy Boys”. They don’t want gear heads, they want people who can’t do anything for themselves. I’d be surprised if more than 50% of today’s male youth know how to change a tire without calling someone or googling it, much less change oil or anything more complex. I’m 100yrs, that number will probably be closer to less than 15-20% and that’s being very conservative.

The engineers and product managers at Toyota disagree with this assessment...

I have been studying this intently. And reading what the "visionaries" who are at the core of this are saying. I only wonder what they are thinking and not saying.

In order for this to work as envisioned individuals will not own cars. You reserve one by telling Big Brother where and when you want to go. Then this car picks you up, telling every other car when and where you are, when you are returning. How do police stop you? Turn you off.

Karl Marks. Adolph Hitler and Mao only wish they had so much TOTAL control over your life.

Before this happens they will have to take away the 2nd Amendment.

In God We Trust.
