all go to medical school (MD school where you become a physician)

Again, I'm well aware. I don't get why people keep repeating this as if I don't understand it. All I'm trying to say that it doesnt matter if you went to medical school or any other professional school: if you haven't been trained specifically to perform surgeries, you shouldn't be performing surgeries.

Sure, because thats what they are trained to do. If you need an open heart surgery, you're not going to a cardiologist though.

Systematically learning the human body in medical school should be a prerequiste for surgically altering said human body

Of course. Necessary but not sufficient. I'm not even really sure why you are arguing with me here. You would let a cardiologist perform open heart surgery on you? A neurologist perform brain surgery on you? A rheumatologist surgically replace an osteoarthritic hip? etc etc etc

I only support it due to the hypocrisy of the medical community. Non of the specialists have opposed mid levels basically given full practice rights in primary care despite perhaps an even greater gap in total knowledge. Now that they are infringing on their domain, it's a big damn deal. Too late. You'll get no support from the rest of us. You guys are right. The optometrist should not have their roles expanded. It's not in the best interest of anyone. But neither should NP's, PA's, and cRNA's. But this is healthcare of the future. Those that know better and can afford it will get MD's and overall superior care. Meanwhile, others will receive lesser, cheaper care from other providers.

And I employ two NP's, my brother is a cRNA, and my nephew a PA. Don't fight it. Embrace it and make it work for you. My partner refuses to and works longer, harder hours for waaaaaaay less money. You can train them to do what you need, profit from it and lesser your load of bullshite. They do my forms and paperwork. They "take the talk" out of the patients before I go in. And can handle 99% of the bullshite phone calls we get.

You sound like your in the next step of the grieving process in the decline of medicine--acceptance I'm sorry no one was there for you

Not arguing at all, just reiterating it. I wouldn't have surgery by a non-surgeon in 99% of cases. Definitely not by an non-MD

"Not only will young ophthalmologists be tempted to go elsewhere and leave this state," said Williams. "But so would young medical doctors who are finishing their training will find Louisiana a less hospitable place to practice medicine..then we really will have an access problem."

It does worry me. Not to mention the apathy being created in the current medical community now.... And hey, go to BFE & do a couple YAG's & few unnecessary PI's - knock yourself out--but if you really wanna help, fix that 2am no pay open globe while your there.

Optometrists have lied their asses off and tried to convince the legislature they are qualified to do these surgical procedures. Looks like many of the idiot legislators have been bought into this.

Fixed.

Same happened when the psychologists came up with their bullshite M.P. designation requiring some half-assed pay your fee get your B mail order pharmacology course. They were going to serve all the underserved rural communities like, say Baton Rouge, Shreveport, New Orleans. They bought Blanco and some influential legislators.

Achieve through legislation what you can't through education.

Well if people didn't know the difference between an optom and an ophthalmologist before, they will now! I think ultimately the optoms are going to do themselves more harm than good with generating public mistrust and souring good working relationships with the medical community- while the real competition will be the autorefractor gadgets that make glasses for you at Wal-Mart

I agree with this quote.

I hate to say but my prediction is 26-13 it passes

La senator (optometrist) pushes thru a bill allowing eye surgery certification in a 4 day course

With absolutely no regard to public opinion

Why does the OP hate freedom?

Let consumers decide what they want.
