Don’t understand the hate for State Farm… they gave reasoning 4 months ago why they were pulling out.

The city was dropping the ball and creating a situation that was a powder keg. Came to fruition.

AB is dumb AF about this. State farm told the Cali gov....hey the risk is too high, we cant insure cali homes unless we are allowed to raise rates as a bad fire would bankrupt us

cali gov said no so they pulled out. Should SF go bankrupt because the Cali gov is dumb AF?

this was 6 months ago anyways, responsible homeowners would have found another company with in a week or two.

Agreed.

State Farm didn’t frick up fire coverage or water availability. They saw where things were going and left months ago.

They would have stayed if the California governing authority over insurance companies would have approved State Farm's requested rate increase.

yea because this kind of event wouldnt have bankrupted them

as it stood it would have

they were smart in weighing risk vs reward

insurance companies are in business to make money too.

State Farm isn't stupid, they stop writing new policies in California in 2023, and started cancelling current fire policies in March of 2024.

Were there others or just the most recent? I've not heard of others but I would bet there were. I have had Shelter for 30+ years and after Katrina (I think) they quit writing policies south of Hattiesburg.

Hang on, so now this website suddenly understands insurance carrier risk/reward decision making? I'll be sure to bring up this topic again in the next monthly installment of "my insurance renewal is through the roof" thread where everyone bitches about insurance companies and how much they charge.

Most are.

SF is actually a mutual company, owned by policy holders. Dividend checks go out to policy holder if they ever do too good.

I mean they still want good salaries and bonuses, but no share holders to make a profit for.

They still have a responsibility to remain financially stable so they can pay claims for other insureds in other areas however.

If they don’t scale back their presence in the market in places where rate increases aren’t allowed to be sufficient to cover the risk or where they have too much of the market share like CA and the gulf coast, then that would put them at jeopardy of not being able to pay claims across the country if it all goes to one mega disaster.
