Another company pushing social justice politics and responding to criticism with hostility
quote:

When Electronic Arts revealed the teaser trailer for its new Battlefield game for the first time, it was probably hoping to spark a wave of hype across an excited fanbase. Instead, it found itself facing an outraged backlash that spread like wildfire. It didn't take long before the #notmybattlefield hashtag was trending on Twitter, and a vocal minority of fans were demanding change.
The problem? There were too many women in the Battlefield 5 trailer.

let me translate this mischaracterization: it's a world war 2 game and the character featured most prominently is a 90 lbs chick killing machine with an advanced cybernetic arm. it also features a black guy wearing some weird wrestling or fantasy war paint. basically, it breaks the immersion into the world of ww2 and it ignores the ugly reality of the times in which the armed forces were segregated.

quote:

The initial backlash was laced with cries for historical accuracy, but EA's chief creative officer, Patrick Soderlund, says this gets the facts wrong. "These are people who are uneducated -- they don't understand that this is a plausible scenario," he told Gamasutra in a recent interview. "The common perception is that there were no women in World War II. There were a ton of women who both fought in World War II and partook in the war."

the interesting part is he is attacking his consumers and yet he is unaware how many of them he is attacking. it could be a lot. he also risks turning off fence sitters, or people who were going to buy it despite agreeing with the criticisms being levied at the game.

don't insult consumers...I can't believe this needs to be said.

I don't even need to address how absurd the rest of the quote is
quote:

"This is a game. And today gaming is gender-diverse."

but ww2 wasn't. which is fine, just don't attack people who have that criticism. say nothing. nothing is good. also, it seems like this is your real agenda. I also wonder how "gender-diverse" his audience is. seems like shooting people in the face is a genre that appeals much more to men.

quote:

"Well," he says, "you have two choices: either accept it, or don't buy the game. I'm fine with either/or."

is this guy fricking stupid? it's bad enough to say "don't buy the game out loud" it's even worse to say "i'm fine with [it]"

companies strive for personal investment in the brand. derp. they also, and again I can't believe this has to be said, shouldn't call any of their consumers "uneducated" or tell them to get fricked. you can stand by your game by not responding or say "I hope the people who are upset give it a chance because I think they'll really like it. Give it a chance to win you over"

I don't even care about the company pushing social justice politics or the backlash they got for it. I find it interesting that these companies react with contempt and hostility aimed at consumers. blows my mind

I hope it works out for them and they sell a bunch of games, but this is a really bad idea. Those statements don't cause consumers to buy your game, they only cause people to not buy your game. the degree to which it will negatively impact sales is unpredictable. could be insignificant, but why even play with fire when it doesn't help you and can only hurt you?

It is not the woman in the trailer that bothered people. It was the underlying virtue signalling as well as the fatigue people have of seeing “kickass women” in every form of media.

The fact that this is EA too is just hilarious. Like they haven’t done enough already to alienate the gaming community

EA deserves to die a slow, painful death.

EA continues to be their own worst enemy.

They’re already fricking up a lot of their non-sports franchises by insisting that linear gameplay is dead and that all their stuff be MMO.

Battlefield was one of the few franchises they hadn’t fricked up yet, albeit doing so with the related Star Wars Battlefield series.

I’m just waiting to see how Activision can top this so that Battlefield and Call Of Duty both die off in favor of new series to run into the ground.

If the producers of the game were going for authentic WWII content, then yes, a woman with a cybernetic arm in the 1940's doesn't seem to fit...

I've been playing Kingdom Come Deliverance which is a historically accurate game set in the 1400s during the Holy Roman Empire. There was a little backlash due to everyone in the game being white. But that's the way it was.

Typical liberal response: If you disagree with me, you are morally inferior and need to be prevented from disagreeing.

It's shocking how few people see the correlation b/w this mindset and most of the atrocities committed throughout history.

Yeah. The article is ridiculous. He knows what the backlash is about, and if he doesn’t he shouldn’t respond.

1.Mischaracterize your consumers
2.Malign your consumers
3. Divest them of their personal attachment to the brand
4. Encourage your consumers not to buy it
5. Sit back and watch the sales soar

Huh?

Idiots tried to pull that crap on Witcher III.

I believe that the developers’ response boiled down to “It’s Middle Ages Germany, dumbfricks.”

This is how you show you didn't learn anything from Disney's "The Last Jedi" debacle.

It's the leftist mentality. This is their reaction to any opposition of any kind.

Or ghostbusters

Whether you’re right or wrong is irrelevant. Do not malign your consumer

It reminds me of Mary landrieu telling voters she fricked over “if you don’t like it, vote me out” rather then “this is why I think my vote was good for you. Or I think I’m helping my state”
