EDIT:

Another active thread anchored because some moderator has a political disagreement with its content?

I am a Cruz guy all the way, but that interview scared me about the upcoming debates.

Beto is polished and affable. He was humorous when appropriate and even self-deprecating about that awful “punk rock dress” photo. Sure, he dodged inconvenient facts, but all politicians do that.

Cruz is a wonk and will win the debates on substance, but I am now concerned that Beto will win some votes on pure presentation.

Every time I hear him speak I equate him with Obama. Same cadence in his voice and same line of bullspit. The guy is a steaming POS.

And again, I'll ask the question: Why is a senatorial candidate from Texas on late night talk shows?

Similar to why is governor candidate from Georgia on late night talk shows?

Seems like an agenda my be being pushed.

I do not disagree on substance, but I do disagree on style.

Obama has this stilted, staccato cadence that I find annoying. Beto’s presentation flows much more smoothly and naturally.

The odd thing is that his speaking style translates well in Spanish, as well. Most Mexicans speak quickly and with a bit of a staccato cadence, but Beto’s consersational Spanish flows much like his English.

I don't watch Colbert, but have seen the guy elsewhere and agree with you. Cruz will win the substance debate O'Rourke's style and ability to remain calm and confident during discussions make him a very legit threat. He is more personable and likeable than Cruz and just that will swing a lot of voters.

This election will be about turnout.

Sure, there is speculation that he is aiming for something national ... and that may well be true.

But ask this question ... Will more Texans see him on Colbert or being interviewed for a local broadcast in Houston? The approach is effective.

Before this, I had mostly seen him in news clips, where he just seemed to be a very smooth and polished politician. In this conversational setting, he conveys a VERY affable vibe.

My point is all the late night talk show hosts are having candidates on their shows, who are unknown outside of their states. These are not the normal talk show guests. And they are all democrats.

True. I thought it was pretty tactless (and indicative of his leanings) that Colbert told jokes about Cruz buying ad time DURING the Colbert/Beto broadcast.

In fairness, however, Colbert has done the same (obscure guests) all the way back to the old Colbert Report.

You hit the nail on the head Beto will get crushed on substance.

Cruz doesn’t need to be cordial at all. Those debates he did with Bernie on CNN earlier this year were way to fake. He needs to pound and attack.

Beto wants universal healthcare. How much is that going to cost Beto, articulate your plan? Attack him on second amendment and immigration. Those 3 issues Cruz can absolutely expose Beto on.

For cherry on top ask Beto how much Hollywood and New York is pouring into his race.

Go back to the 2016 GOP debates. The simple fact is that Cruz crushed Trump on substance in those debates as well. But Trump won the race, and lots of folks claim that he won the debates ... purely based upon presentation.

In that case, the successful style was belligerence rather than affability, but it demonstrates that Cruz’s superior grasp of the issues will not necessarily be determinative of the perceived winner.

My point is that he need not make ANYTHING “fly,” for many voters. He need only seem to be the guy with whom they would prefer to share a beer. He may pull that off.

Unfortunately, it seems that many did NOT watch the interview, but instead want to stay with the same discussion re Beto from the past six months.
