Abolish all welfare programs and give the poor a lump sum/monthly equivalent of the funds

Would save money on net because of bureaucratic jobs that could be slashed. No more individual departments for health funds, food funds, housing funds, etc.

Would raise standard of living for the poor because economic choice theory (indifference curves) says utility is maximized when the government program gives the poor the funds rather than a specific good/service

Will never get through because asshats in both parties would complain the money wouldn’t be spent on good things

I like the idea in theory but in reality it would just dilute the value of the dollar

No because poor people are poor because they are bad with money. Not because they don’t have money.

ETA: I think welfare system is bad though as it stands. Needs to be completely overhauled by Trump and the squad

I have an idea. Deport all illegals and send the welfare queens out to the fields to work those jobs that "Americans don't want."

Welfare should NEVER be in the form of money.

Food, clothing, work/school supplies. That's it. And only for a limited time.

Poor people are poor because they have low IQ.

There are plenty of low IQ people that know they can’t sit on their arse and watch tv and drink beer all day.

It’s not about IQ. It’s about lack of personal responsibility over the span of years and even decades for some people

It's definitely about IQ if we're talking about averages. On average, lower IQ = lower income.

"Bad with money" is just another way of saying "dumb."

I’ve met plenty of simple people who worked hard and provided for their families.

So, how are their purchases of drugs, booze and lottery tickets gonna keep them alive?

What do you do with the massive numbers of then-unemployed people?

You can't slash & burn these programs. You have to create a trajectory that dwindles them down.

Deport illegals and send them to work. Pretty simple.

Why?

We spend more money in the long run trying to divert all of these services and needs to them.

I had a similar thread on this. The amount that we've spent and continue to spend is jaw dropping and it has literally 0 effect on getting people out of poverty.

Would be no worse than what is currently happening

Every society has poverty, and people who can’t or don’t contribute much.

Do we let these people starve? Or do we choose to provide for them? And how much do we provide?

The Romans gave out free bread to the poor to ensure stability in Rome. To avoid unrest.

Not that I disagree with that....but, have you seen the dysfunction in DC? You really think they're going to be able to make all the changes necessary to make that happen?

That’s why the war on poverty rhetoric was so off target.

These programs may make poverty kinder, easier, but they won’t get people out of poverty.
