hijack plane and fly it somewhere like North Korea or Myanmar. Load stolen nuclear device from Russia or a North Korean nuclear device onto plane. Fly plane to Japan or South Korea and detonate in air above large US base.

WWIII

If you've got the money for some nukes, you could probably swing a sweet finance deal on a used B707 and just not make any payments.

Your idea of it being stolen was the similar to a plot on NCIS. They were stealing an old helicopter that was set to be decommissioned to sell on the black market.

They turned off the transmitter and landed it at a location to hand it over to the buyer.

not necessarily. we're talking about missing suitcase nukes from the old USSR. they may have the money for one or two of those nukes, but may not have the money for a sweet plane.

Plus, why not steal whatever you can?

This scenario isn't as far fetched as you make it seem. How is this any different than, say, a terrorist group hiding a suitcase nuke on a cargo ship and remotely detonating it as the ship enters harbor?

The problem with the ship scenario is that less devastation would occur if the nuke was detonated on the ship rather than in the air above the target.

The idea is to inflict as much devastation as possible.

Because you may want to avoid this much attention before you carry out your main goal.

no one said that the strike would happen immediately following the hijack. Months, perhaps years, may go by...

I assume he'll interrupt our broadcast with his nefarious plan once all the pieces are in place.

Suitcase nuke? It's cheaper to just rent a UHaul and buy some plastic barrels for some triple 13 and diesel fuel.

I'm pretty sure this is just an accident/"man made disaster." I'm fascinated nobody has found any debris or wreckage.

You appear to have missed the entire reason I posted what I did.

I know absolutely nothing about planes, but why in the world would they allow for the transponder to be turned off, I would think it would be tamper proof?

It is, you apparently know more than the creator of the scenario.

There's a Tom Clancy (RIP) plot in there somewhere.

Here's another similar situation. Fedex 705

I watched the movie version with Tom Hanks, although the plot was different. I think Wilson was a Muslim though.

Time traveling stewerdesess who chain smoke put the plane in temporary stasis. Then they unloaded all of the passengers and sent them to settle new planets. They replaced the passengers with body doubles that were genetically identical to each passenger because that shite is easy to do in the future.
