A Libertarian Critique of the Modern Left

I came into politics in the early 2000's, was in college during the Bush years and law school during Obama's 1st term. Back then, libertarians seemed to have much more in common with those on the left than they did Republicans. None of the Ron Paul crowd I knew would even think about voting for McCain or Romney.
My how a decade changes things. Looking at the political landscape now, the modern left more resembles the Bush-era neocons than anything that can be considered liberal. Today, I find myself agreeing more and more with Republicans than I do with Democrats. Perhaps it's because the left has shedded any and all pretense of civil libertarianism. This is a party whose voting base:
-Believes speech is violence, hate speech should be banned and has no problem using violence to suppress constitutionally protected speech.
-Has become the new Puritans, whose messianic adherence to the doctrine of poltiical correctness has turned them into moral nannies who want to take the fun out of life. Imagine George Carlin's reaction were he alive today.
-Wants us to believe all women and throw away centuries of legal precedent concerning the presumption of innocence.
-Worships at the altar of identity politics, where your worth and value is determined by your status on the victim hierarchy.
-Has no problem with Obama's secret kill list or assassinating American citizens without charge or trial.
-Has no problem with undeclared wars in Libya and Syria and drone wars in Somalia, Pakistan and Yemen.
-Has no problem with last-second, defamatory and uncorroborated accusations being leveled at a Supreme Court nominee in an attempt to block his appointment.
-Has no problem with FISA courts or spying on one's political opponents under the pretense of false opposition research.
-Cheers on a Special Counsel in Robert Mueller who himself was a cheerleader for the Iraq War, a Bush lackey and a man who ruined the life of Steven Hatfill after bungling the post-9/11 Anthrax case.
-Supports a two-tiered justice system, where Clinton cronies go unprosecuted but Republican supporters of Trump have their homes raided, their lives turned upside down and process crimes levied against them in an attempt to justify a never-ending investigation.
-Believes everything the NSA, CIA and FBI tell them.
-Claims that Edward Snowden and Julian Assange are traitors for providing transparency to American citizens and exposing the crimes of our political class.
-Wants to start a second Cold War with Russia for something the United States does more of than every country on Earth combined.
-Welcomes with open arms former neocons like David Frum, Bill Kristol, Jennifer Rubin, Steve Schmidt, Nicole Wallace and others who reflexively support America's warmongering and mass surveillance.
I wonder, did the left ever actually believe in any of the anti-war and anti-surveillance rhetoric they used to spew? Doesn't appear that they were ever sincere does it?

They don’t believe anything they aren’t told to believe. It’s not about principles to them. It’s about power.
I used to have a lot in common with the left. They were honestly right about a lot during the Bush presidency. I fricking loathe them now. They are totalitarians and becoming ever more dangerous.

They’ve thrown away what used to be important to them because being in power is the only objective now, and that’s by any means necessary.

Yep. Neo Puritanism. The modern day religious left

Well said. As much as it will make people on here want to vomit, places like DU were a great refuge during the time of Dubya/neocons. Democrats were anti-war, anti-authority, anti-deep state, civil libertarians. Their transformation since then has been very strange. I never understood supporting neocon-lite Hillary, but I guess the Clintons received support from many of the same forces that used to promote Bush/Cheney.

What?!
So Antifa, trannies, gender fluids, radical socialist, P.C. Police and statist totalitarians remind you of former Bush neo- cons?

I can’t upvote this enough

Lose the libertarian title. It’s time to move back to “classically liberal”

The parties haven’t changed.
You have. You are smarter now and have a better view.

“Don’t do the crime if you don’t want to do the time”

If Trump were to come out for breaking up the big banks, they’d become free market puritans in a second. It’s all about removing obstacles from power

Not so fast, my friend! This is where the Modern Left's hypocrisy manifests itself. Look at the treatment of Brett Kavanaugh as opposed to Ted Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Keith Ellison and other liberal democrats.

And what would this be?

There's some good points in there.
As a libertarian, now do a critique of the modern right.

I really want to debunk this, but it’s really dumb and long. Gimme a bit and I might come back. I don’t even disagree with all of it. The large majority, sure, but there might be a point of agreement if we sat down with a pack of Marlboros and a pitcher of beer.

SCL, you present some very interesting thoughts.
I want to cogitate a bit before posting my thoughts as a (perhaps) less strident libertarian than you, but I want you to know in advance that I am looking forward to the analysis.
Yours is perhaps the most-substantive post in weeks.

Can we get a tl;dr?

Why don’t you do that?
