LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — USC is mourning the loss of several students this semester, but they have not all died of suicide, the university’s president, Carol Folt, said in a statement.

Seven USC students have died since the fall semester began in the last week of August. Folt said the losses are devastating and heartbreaking for the school.

But in a letter to parents, she said that it is not correct that most of the deaths were the result of suicide.

“These tragic losses have resulted from a number of different causes. In some cases the cause of death is still undetermined, and in others loved ones do not want details disclosed,” Folt said in the letter.

USC’s chief health officer, Dr. Sarah Van Orman, said the university believes the deaths happened off-campus.

Speculation over the deaths has been rampant on the campus

Sounds like they were suicides.

Depends on whether you consider a drug overdose as a suicide.

OH, and the two USC sources are Carol and Sarah. There's the problem with getting at the truth.

They only have 20k students.

The national suicide rate for that age group is about 12 per 100k annually

Seven deaths among 48,000 students. Between accidents and suicide is that unreasonable?

My first thought was maybe Felicity Hoffman has more kids looking for a spot at USC.

Yeah, looks like they should only have 1 or 2 a semester. They said not all were suicides, but probably 5 are, so yeah something is up.

Enrollment data is all effed up due to online classes. The number of on-campus students is significantly lower.

If the loved ones don’t want the cause disclosed, it’s suicide or OD.

I wonder how big opioids are out there.

Enrollment is about 47,500 students. I’m not so sure the mortality rate is out of line.
Sucks for those families, though.

I understand your point but wherever I look I'm seeing 45,000 to 48,000 enrolled students. Some of those may be taking courses online but should one of them die in an accident wouldn't they be classified as a USC student?

Good question, I don't know, but the number going from 20K to 45K changes the rate from being an anomaly to an investigative issue.
