I once read a book called the Devil’s Picnic by Taras Grescoe that, among many other discussions, makes a pretty good libertarian argument for legal euthanization. If you think about it, and regardless of any moral considerations, it’s the ultimate expression of individual liberty.

That said, 17 seems entirely too young for this. The U.S. doesn’t even let 20 year olds drink a beer. Surprisingly, 17 is actually on the older end insofar as the right for Dutch kids to be euthanized goes:

quote:

Children as young as 12 can legally seek to be euthanized in the Netherlands, but a doctor must first determine that the patient’s pain is unbearable before they can be accepted.

a girl i grew up with battled breast cancer off and on for 20 years. eventually the docs told her there was nothing else to be done. her family went to hawaii for a week and on the last day she had a doctor send her into the great unknown

don’t know how i feel about a 17 yr old making that choice but i do believe it should be an option for whatever we consider adults

It’s a tough call for sure. It’s also much more of a relevant issue today because of modern medical science than it ever was in the past. 100 years ago, if you were at the level of pain that makes you wish for death, typically you didn’t have long to live. Now though we can sometimes keep you alive for 5, 10, 20 or more years, no matter how much pain you’re experiencing. My view is that if we allow modern science to unnaturally extend our lives then we should also allow it to end our lives using painless methods (and obviously consensually).

I don't think matters of suicide or elective death are for any of us to judge or for any court to legislate.

Every man is given one life to live. There is no law that says they must live it.

Very sad story.

Saw this posted earlier in another thread. 17 seems like such a young age to make that kind of choice but I didn't walk in her shoes. All I can say is that I hope she found the peace she was seeking.

I certainly think that adults should be allowed for suicide with restrictions. Heck, allow some prisoners the choice if they are facing life sentences.

Too young to be making life and death decisions for themselves

Everyone already has the right to kill them selves your complaint seems to be geared towards the ease of completing it and the sinfulness of accomplishing the task. There should have been more effort to help this young lady better choice how-eve without factoring the extenuating circumstances of the individual who is contemplating death how can you deny outright them the ability to end their suffering. I believe it is Gods sole responsibility to declare that person incorrect in their decision as he is the ultimate judge of righteousness.

It's surprising how little value humans place on of life these days.

So many people feel like it's the right thing to do to support someones free will to make permanent choices like these. Until they are directly affected by this kind of senseless action. Then they understand that in 99% of these cases just a little bit of support and compassion could have made all the difference in the world. But it's too late now because no one cared enough to get involved and in stead too the easy route and said not my life, who am I to deny you your free will.

Apparently the slippery slope found a cliff...

This is a subject with many social and christian/ spiritual layers and not many of them good that a message board is hard to express on.

Here is a significant distinction between the Dutch child and your woman friend.

The Dutch girl, though undoubtedly suffered a significant trauma, was suffering an emotional trauma and could have eventually found peace.

I cannot see how any doctor could sanction this and uphold the Hippocratic oath.

Who are you to tell someone what they can and can’t do with their life or body?

You can't handle the twists and turns of life, jump off a bridge or hang yourself. You're such a pussy about your problems you have to have the medicated way out. Something tells me she would have done this even without being raped at some point in her life.

How callous to pretend you understand anything about the mental and emotional place she found herself. The world some of you live in where you can pound your chest on a message board and act like life isn’t nuanced and complicated is not the real world. While I hope the girl went through extensive counseling, if she didn’t have a support structure in place to help her through this trauma, then perhaps the fear and self-loathing she was experiencing was a prison she could not escape from.

People should be given peace so long as it doesn’t impact the physical well being of others. I wish this girl such a peace, I despise the callousness that would judge this girl through one article.
