$15 minimum wage question

Say you have on employee making $9 and hour while their manager makes $14 an hour. If they minimum wage moves up to $15, how much more will the manager have to make? They both can't make $15 an hour with totally different experience and skill sets.

And so the march to socialism becomes apparent in that realization

Most businesses wont have the salary budget space to bump up the manager in that scenario with an equal increase

They all make $15 per hour or the employee’s job gets eliminated and the manager does both jobs.
What could possibly go wrong with this plan.

Easy, you fire the $9 and the manager assumes his duties.

If a ratio was applied, it would be
9 is to 14 as 15 is to ? and ? would be $23.34
But common sense and the invisible hand apply, so they’d soon be out of work.

Too many scenarios to list, but what about that 16-year-old bagging groceries?
No one is going to pay a 16 yo $15 an hour to do anything. So what now? Wait until they are 18 and have no job experience?
If you are an adult, and you are making less than $15 an hour, it is because you do not have a skill and did not try to get one. Period.

The overwhelming business won’t have the payroll space to increase. Therefore, employees around min wag to $10 will be let go or have reduced hours. The managers will be glorified min wage employee.
You’ll also see plenty of min wage workers request lower hours as they don’t want to lose/reduced welfare benefits.

You're exactly right. Unfortunately, these are things that those pushing for a $15/hr minimum wage don't consider (and probably don't care about, anyway).
My Dad owns a small business, it does tile installation in homes/businesses. Hypothetically speaking, if he has two employees who have the same job title, but one has more experience working for my Dad, that one will be paid a bit more per hour. That's just the nature of the business, because experience is rewarded when it is hard to find people to do that kind of work. If my Dad is forced to bump them both up to $15/hr (they both make well above the current minimum wage but not $15/hr), then the guy with more experience who has worked for my Dad for 6-7 years is going to be getting paid the same as the guy who has only worked for my Dad a year. Is that fair?

I lived through this situation before. At the place that I worked as a kid, there was a man named Connie King with 15 years of faithful service and was getting 33% more than the minimum wage. When the minimum wage was changed from $0.75 per hour to $1.00 per hour, the boss was generous and gave Connie $1.05. True story.
PS: I decided to get the he!! out and found a job elsewhere at $1.25.

There are SO many things that the "raise minimum wage" crowd hasn't thought out about this whole thing.

You fire the 9 and bump the other guy up.

Umm firefighters make less than that in some areas.
Plus you have people starting out in their careers with a degree not much higher than 15.
Let's say they make 17,do you push them up too?

Well considering there is labor laws which require salaried employees to make just more than $17/hr for a 40 work week, I don't see this scenario being applicable.

I never said either one was salaried.

A position is only worth so much money within a business plan... That position makes the company "x" amount of money and it is not worth more than "y" to the company... When the cost of "y" increases, then "X" must be increased along the same path or the business will not be able to sustain itself...
The folks suggesting minimum wage at $15 per hour never ran a lemonade stand or mommy covered their loses... They think the "evil" owners of the business will just have to pay more out of their pocket...

Manager makes $15, employee under him loses his job.

There will be a lot of businesses that will try to navigate their newly woke payroll budget thru the use of contract labor as opposed to employees. It won't work everywhere but rules will be bent.

Manager- bump pay up to $18-$19/hr to do both jobs
