Like H&R Block?

I own a house, sold some property this year, and co-own a mortgage on another condo - getting a little too complicated for me. Thanks!

The last time I used H & R Block was three years ago when I got arse raped.

They charged nearly $300.00 for one and a half hours worth of work for my wife and me.

TaxCut ever since.

I was able to find a good accountant for $200 last year and that included buying my house and expense write offs for work. H&R Block was charging me $220 before I even owned a house or had any work expenses. Ask around for references at work or through friends.

It depends on the complexity of your return. Most professionals charge by the hour. The best approach is to make an appointment with a few CPAs or enrolled agents and ask how much they will charge to prepare your return. The initial meetings should be free of charge. You are looking at a professional relationship that may last several years. So meet with more than one and make sure you are comfortable with the preparer as they will become intimate with your affairs over the years.

Damn that's expensive. I need to find me a CPA friend.

Poodlebrain, good advice. Looks like I may have to do just that.

I pay $180, and my taxes are a little more complicated than normal.

But my CPA is in jail, that's why I get a deal.

Some charge by form. Regular 1040 w/ no schedules is around $75.

HTown:

I'm a CPA gearing up for this year. I'd be glad to help in the preparation of your 2007 return and discuss 2008 tax savings strategies. My fees avg. $185.00.

Call me for an appt. at 225-926-8299.

Thanks

Htown - I have a good friend that is a CPA in the Galleria area. Private firm, but they charge $100 per hour and do excellent work. If you go the private route, it will depend on how much work is involved, but as someone said earlier, they are usually more than willing to at least discuss approximate costs on the phone (if not in person) with you. If you like, I can forward the info to you...
