So as Ive posted I got the Char-Griller Komado Akorn off Amazon for $300. Last night seasoned the grates and got this thing ready to go. Debated on what to cook for the inaugural grill and what better way to see what this thing can do than to heat it up to 600+ and throw some steaks on. So here we go.

the grill

the steaks

while the grill is warming up did some corn on the cobb and sausage

didn't take any pictures with the steaks on the grill because i wanted to keep the heat in but heres the final product

Steaks were incredible! Never really cooked on charcoal so this is a learning experience, took about 40 minutes to get the grill good and hot but we kept opening it to check on the corn and mess with the sausage. After the cook I closed the vents and its been taking about 2 hours to cool down, hoping this isnt due to air getting in and keeping the coals aflame.

Nice,

So initial report is it cooks a good steak. The kamado will take a long time to cool down because it is so insulated. Hopefully that's all you were seeing. I was a little worried it might not handle high temp cooking very well. All online reports say its great at low and slow BBQ so good luck.

how long should the coals stay lit after the vents are closed. thats kind of what im worried about that air was keeping them going. i havent cooked with charcoal so still learning the behavior of the coals

I read on kamadoguru somewhere that the fire should snuff out in like maybe 10 to 20 minutes at most. Temps should take a while to cool down after that.

But,

If the fire does not snuff then you do have an air leak somewhere. It might take a little high temp rtv sealant around the bottom vent or they have some things they have done with bge felt to seal it up all the way. That is one of the drawbacks of the low price is having to make a few minor mods. Once it is sealed up though its a done deal and you should not have anymore issues.

Just look and see how lump you have left the next morning compared to when you shut it down. If there is drastically less, then you probably have a leak.

Tonight I did some Pork Chops. Marinated them in Grill Mates got the Akorn up to about 400 and put them on. Cooked then for about 12 minutes (grill hung around 350ish while opening the top) then threw them on the warming rack for another 6-8. Anyway chops came out super juicy and were awesome.

really enjoying cooking with this thing and if anyone has been on the fence i recommend it. will do my first long smoke on friday.

That looks like it has plenty of surface area to cook on. Ie been waiting for the prices of those to come down. That sounds like a bargain

So how was the slow smoke? I have the exact same Akorn as you. Smoked two pork butts Saturday that came out great, even though I could only smoke them for about 4 hours.

Slow cook went well considering the storm I was grilling through. Grill went out once and I had to relight but that was due to my paranoid of trying to get the temperate back to 250. Ribs stayed on the grill for a good 6 hours with no issues
