Just got some plans to build my own boat.

Is there anywhere in Louisiana/south MS/SE Texas that I can buy the plywood? I’ve found it online, but the shipping costs nearly as much as the plywood itself.

TIA

Not sure what okuome plywood is, but I am betting you will have a hard time finding any plywood in Louisiana in the near future, when we did the first pirouge build with Fish I think they found the plywood we used at Ashy lumberyard in Lafayette?

Any specialty hardwood supplier should be able to get it. I see there are several. Just a quick google search.

Gave them a call and no dice. They did refer me to Robichaux’s in Raceland, who has it. Thanks for the help!

SK14 from boat builders central

Basically a souped up paddle board/kayak that can take an 8 HP outboard.

Gonna use to fish for reds in small ponds, etc.

Really excited about it.

Edit:
Here’s a pic of one:

By the way, planning on building a kayak over the winter myself. Been researching Pigmyboats.com and clcboats.com Not sure if I am going to buy the kit from them or the plans and cut out the plywood myself. Both are good websites with lots of plans and videos if you are interested.

That’s actually who I was looking at with the expensive shipping. Lol.

I think I found a good source locally.

Here’s the study plans:

Where are you located?

I've been slowly drawing up my own skiff plans and am looking to start building it in a year so.

Don't even think they make okuome marine grade.

They can order marine grade fir. High dollar stuff and then some. Would be cheaper to build out of metal these days.

Nice little skiff. If it was me, I would use Fir plywood, 1/4" thick to keep the weight down. Would NOT glass it.

My brother wanted me to build one something like that. He fishes the back waters in Regio. Just can't do it anymore.

Love that area.

Could also look into foam core

Yes, okuome is a marine plywood. It's used world wide and one of the favorites due to it's light weight, appearance, and ability to fair a curve.

And by all means glass it.... but only if you want to keep it. The plywood is the weakest link in this equation rot wise. It'll also water tighten and reinforce the joints. As well helping achieve (and maintain) the finish and lessen frictional resistance which'll allow a 8hp engine to achieve it's maximum performance.

Not a fan of glassing plywood. Cold coating with epoxy, sure. Foam fill a plus. If one keeps that boat out the weather, plywood not coated will be fine.
