I'd have to agree with you...

My son is 14 now and I'm giving him all of the useful life lessons he'll need later on. I've yet to have a moment like you but I'm sure it's coming.

Look at the bright side, you taught them how to change the oil and what could happen if they don't pay attention to the job they're doing.

Just dont drive the truck with no earl in it.

I’ve two: I drained the transmission once while trying to change the engine oil on a 91 7.3 ford. I noted to myself how clear the oil was.

My bro was told to “fill up the oil”. So he filled ‘er up to the top of the valve cover. bye bye engine.

My dad loaded my oldest sister and I into mom's Lincoln 2 door one Saturday morning to go for a drive. He was teaching her how as she was doing the drivers ed deal at the same time. Car was basically like this 74. I was 6.



So, she does a couple of laps around the neighborhood and the downtown square. Tells her, let's go over here and fill 'er up at the full service Texaco.

She whips in and takes out the first pump with the nose of this lead sled. Knocked it clean off the concrete. Chaos and lots of cussing.

I think he had to pay for the new pump in installments.

In HS I replaced my starter on an 89 GMC Sierra, seemed like it took my ALL day to do. Wasn't hard taking the old one out, but putting the new one in was a pain. I drove that truck and another truck that was exact same make and year. I got good at changing them eventually.

Don't feel bad. We lived in NOVA. My dad had bought a brand new '78 F-250 4x4 long bed bare bones truck with a 300 cid straight six and a manual transmission. In 1980, I knew I was gonna start driving it when he let me, and I worked at a gas station (back then they had full serve stations and a mechanic on duty). I learned how to change the oil in a car there. I convinced my dad to buy the supplies and let ME change the oil in the truck, as I was eager to show him how responsible and "learned" I could be. Well, he let me change the oil. It all went smooth. I was so proud. Came out and got my dad to take on test drive.

We get maybe a mile down the road and I'm smelling oil smoke and start hearing lifters going "TAPPA TAPPA TAPPA." My dad reaches over tells me push in the clutch and brakes and STOP, while he turns the key off to kill the engine. We pop the hood, get out, and there is oil sprayed ALL over the engine compartment and by now the rest dumped out into the street.

Turns out I forgot to make sure/inspect that the OLD O-Ring off the old oil filter came off, and when I mounted the new oil filter it never sealed. Luckily, no damage done other than a big mess to clean up, and he even let me put the other new oil filter on and re-fill it with oil. He told me he trusted me and that it could have happened to him, and that I could change the oil in both the family car and that truck going forward. What a great dad. I have never made that mistake again!!
