re: When did boat prices get so high?
They are out there. I think it just depends on how long you are willing to wait.

Good luck in the search.

If y’all wanna feel better about the price of your bay boats, take a glance at the price of fiberglass poling skiffs and flats boats. We’re talking 45-65k for an 18’ boat with a 60-90hp on the back. It’s stupid

I almost started this thread a few days ago too. I’ve been looking around and am staggered by new boat prices.

I'd prefer to buy new only for the warranty

This is my dilemma at the moment. I have an 09 Ranger that is a great boat, but I have no engine warranty left. And insurance will fight tooth and nail and will depreciate as much as they can when it comes to replacing something. I want to sell just to turn around and purchase a newer version with some warranty left. But it would be a never-ending cycle.

its cheaper just to fix the motor if something breaks than to buy new because of a warranty....

Yep.

You could probably blow the powerhead every 3 years and still come out ahead keeping what you have.

Lots of R&D and pricey materials used (carbon fiber & Kevlar) to reduce weight. They have to meet very fine weight/draft/load criteria. People who fish a bay boat don't care about +/- 200 lbs, but it can be a major sticking point on a Poling Skiff. Also highly customizable and most are one off to fit the owners wishes. These are not mass produced bay boats.

Is the price high for a Hells Bay? The answer is hell yes. However, look how many older hulls are still in use. The owners care greatly for these boats and maintain them meticulously. Look at the value these boats hold over time.

re: When did boat prices get so high?
As said it's all about the upgrades. Sure the actual hull is pretty similar from 10-20 years ago but the layouts and small stuff is all getting continuously better. 10 years ago a 20 ft bay boat with a 6 inch depthfinder screen and 250hp motor was top of the line, now you have 350-400 hp motors, dual 10 inch screens, dual power poles, dual station on a tower, ipilot, etc.

If you want a 20 ft bay boat with a motor you can find a great hill and motor for 40k.

Buy a 15 or 16ft aluminum boat and deck it out with all the options and a shite ton of electronics. You will not draw as much attention on the lake and get in places the big dogs cant.

Boats are built so much better and last way longer than they once did. Better craftsmanship is what drives the price up, but all in all you're getting a better product - for the most part.

Used prices around here are ridiculous, new is out of the question.

What's the best month to list a bay boat?

I've never felt like there was much wheeling and dealing at a boat dealership vs a car dealership

Am I wrong in this assumption?

Not entirely. The best position to be in while negotiating is being in the position to walk away. IF the dealer you're talking to is giving you a take it or leave it price, walk away and keep walking away until you find a price you like.......or a price you can live with

See Mako and Xpress... and from rumors I hear, Bluewave is having problems as well

re: When did boat prices get so high?
I missed on what i thought was a good deal last week. I saw a 2003 22 ft path finder with a 225 Yamaha with 300 hrs. Guy was asking 14,500 . The loan value was 24k according to my credit union. I called and told him when I get off nights I'd come look at it . Trying not to make an impulse buy. 3 days later it was sold. Just so happens the guy that bought it is a buddy and the boat is in great shape. I was planning to get out of the note on my boat and pay cash for something in that range.

Anytime you start seeing tribal tattoos appear on the side of the hulls the decline is near.

Early 2000's Pathfinders are excellent hulls. Fret not, they pop up with some regularity on the used market. $14k is a steal though.

re: When did boat prices get so high?
Just repower with a new engine if you like your hull and it's in good shape, if you have a 200hp or larger there is no way I'd run one without a warranty given the cost to rebuild a powerhead or lower unit now a days. I just repowered with a new Mercury about 18 months ago, deciding now to either sale it in a few months and get a new one or drop 3k for a couple more years of platinum warranty on it. Mine are from Mercury Racing so I only get 2 years standard with the option to buy 2 more of platinum that covers most everything with a $50 deductible, I've had zero issues so far with the new one, I had zero issues with the the last one in the first two years but in the last two years Mercury spent nearly 20k on it in warranty work, 2 lower units, 2 compressors, and a powerhead, my cost was $150.

how much do new ProXS's run nowadays?

I'm 1 lower unit and 1 compressor in. Just changed my spark plugs this weekend and they looked pretty good, so hoping it doesn't blow up anytime soon

I would not buy a non-4 stroke now a days. So many more benefits and dependability with the SHO.
