Haven't heard much about it lately. Flying out of Venice when the news first came out it was noticeable from the air. However now most of the cane appears to have grown back.

I've read a couple articles in the past month that stated the situation is currently being studied by LSU and LDW biologist. I would think they should have something by years end to tell us.

My gut feeling is no one has the available money in their budgets to fix it. Everyone seems in agreement it's a big problem.

I expect them to study it to death and have a solution when everything is washed away. I am still seeing lots of dead cane down there especially near the end of pass a loutre.

Its been spreading north at a rapid pace. There are dozens of acres Roseau cane along the Lake Borgne shorelines where the cane has perished from the bug. The south winds have been blowing the dead or close to dead cane northward spreading the contamination area.

Your gut is right.Mostly

Nobody has any idea how to fix it, let alone pay for it.

Right now, the solutions are, import parasitic insects that use the scale for a host (they are already here in small numbers).

or

Burn all infested stands, be ready to replant immediately

You wouldn't have to replant if they decided to kill it with fire. We burn stands of cane down every year and it comes back. Problem with burning is there's a ton of little wellheads down there that the cane has grown up around.

Was down there a few weeks ago fishing. Ran out one pass and up another. Never saw any dead roseaus.

Asked the capt about it and the answer was it's not as bad as the news made it out to be.

Yes the oil and gas infrastructure is the main thing preventing the burning.

To wipe it out, massive areas would need to be burned. On that scale, there would need to be some replanting.

you have to see it from the air. the infested stands tend to die from the inside out, leaving a think ring of healthy looking cane on the edge. That's what you see from the boat

Also, I am 90% sure that the scale itself does not kill the cane, it does weaken it, making it more vulnerable to others stressors that take it out.

ETA: another big worry is that the scale will eventually make the leap to sugar cane and corn.

Well on a positive note I fished the west side this afternoon. There were three large islands that were totally dead a month ago. Today they were green and looking better. Not sure what allowed that but I'll take it!!!

Yea like I said, when this first broke it was very noticeable and bad. A lot has appeared to have grown back. At least on the east side of the river.

That's good to hear. It is very hard to kill a Roseau cane. The rhizomes are extensive. Likely just top kill them and then they come right bacj

I wouldn't have believed you had I not seen what I saw today. Not sure how it happened but it's welcome even if not the whole stand it's something!
