What to do with stumps on property?

I’m going to rent a skid steer and mulching head this weekend and clear out some brush and small trees on my property. I’ve read that the mulching head only gets the stumps flush with the ground and will cause problems when mowing in the future. If that is the case what’s the best way to go about removing the stumps? There’s going to be a lot. 60+. I feel like grinding them would take forever. I thought about using a mini ex to dig them up but I’m not sure how much it will mess the land up. Any recommendations?
Also if anyone has used a mulching head is it true the stumps will be left too high?

You could drill holes in them, fill the holes with 45-0-0 fertilizer, soak it with water, and cover it with a tarp. Stump will decay much faster.

Not really wanting to go the decaying route. Looking for an immediate solution so the land can be prepped right away

Grinding would be best.
Being you are looking for alternatives, assuming they’re small, what about drilling holes, fill with diesel and light em up...repeat.

Just curious what it’s going to cost you to rent the mulcher?

How big are the stumps? A mini-excavator can't do much damage when it comes to stumps. You might as well go ride rodeo for a weekend

$250 but only because I know the guy who has the machine. He wasn’t going to charge me anything but I imagine 60+ will take its toll on the equipment so I’m going to throw him some cash
If renting from dealer they go for about $500 a day around here. Cheaper if you rent for longer.

Don’t be in a hurry. Doing a good job is your goal.

6” and smaller. I have dug the root bed out of some and just pushed them over but like I said it sometimes made a mess. I’m not tackling any white oak giants.

The proper way is to remove them or grind them down then certainly you are going to regrade the land afterward. Depending on the type of trees there’s a good chance just cutting them flat won’t kill them.

You can dig a mulcher like 2ft in the ground on a bobcat. What are you trying to do with the property?

Maybe find a good pulley system and yank them out of the ground or a hi lift jack to do the same.
Would take much longer than having a machine to get them.
If they are chicken trees, i have cut those down and drilled holes with nitrogen and the dang things just sprouted new shoots againl

Small trees? How small? Less than 4 inches diameter Don’t cut them down just get a 4wd tractor and hook a chain around and pull them out of the ground.
Bigger than that just dig them up with a small ex and it will leave potholes but I would disc the area afterward then drag it with a blade and it’ll smooth it out. Also you can then plant grass on it if you want it to look nice

I killed chicken trees on my property by hacking all around trunk with machete then spraying hacks with Tordon.Secret is you have to do it in the fall when the sap is going down to the roots for the winter so it takes the poison to the roots.I tried it in the summer, killed the main stem but the roots sent up 25 new sprouts.

I bought a woodland mills WG24 stump grinder for my tractor. Best $2400 I ever spent it chews through stumps like nobodies business takes out a 12-14” diameter pine stump in under 5 min. Requires a min 25 hp tractor and hydrostatic transmission is almost a must imo

I would like to clear the land and seed it. If I dug the trees out I would go back and smooth it out with a bucket. How big of a hole does grinding the stump out leave?

I have a couple metal trash cans I cut the bottoms out of. I place them over stumps on my property and add a bag or two (depending on stump size) of match-light charcoal and burn. Take around the stumps first to remove dead leaves and watch often for the first few hours to stomp out any live grass that catches, but after that it’s pretty self contained.

You're only real option is to dig them up.

Grinding doesn't leave a hole. You're usually left with a mound of mulch. The mulch will slowly decay and sink down, leaving a bit of a depression. It really depends on how big the stump/roots are.
