I have a 4' net with 3/8" mesh now, but I am looking to get something a little bigger. It'll mostly be used in the surf for mullet and shrimp. Probably go after some pogeys from the boat as well.

What size net should I buy? I've emailed the people at Barracuda and they recommended a 10' 1/2" net. How much harder is it to throw a 10' vs an 8', especially standing in water in the surf?

I think 1/2" mesh is reasonable, if shrimp are getting out, I still have the 4' net with 3/8" mesh.

What does the OB use?

I have a 6 that catches the shite out of shrimp in the surf
I'm not the best caster, but I couldn't imagine trying a 10' out theree

That's kind of my first thought, that's a lot of net, not to mention the extra weight.

I like an Old Salt 8 footer, just depends on what you’re wanting to do. I use mine for mostly shrimping behind the weirs

I throw a 9' and occasionally a 10' better be in good shape if your looking to hump that thing out there more 15 times

Looks like another vote for the 8'

Looking at LDWF rules and regs, a recreational cast net needs to be <8'-6". Is there another license I should have to throw a bigger one?

A 6' net is more than enough in my opinion. The extra size and weight of anything bigger doesn't justify any greater catch ratio to me.

dont skimp and buy the cheaper net -it usually has less weights and will not go down as fast thus less stuff in net

The 4' feels super small, I don't want to jump up to a 6' and still want more.

The Barracuda brand is pretty new, but seems to already have a good following, plus a limited lifetime warranty.

They recommended the pro series, which has 1.4lb/ft.

Six is easy throwing, all day. I throw an 8, but I want to hit them hard when they are running. It can wear you out if they aren't running, however.

Just to make sure we’re all on the same page...your 4’ net is 4’ in radius. If they’re recommending a 10.5’, that’s 21’ across.

I don’t know how you throw, but I don’t think you’re gonna be opening that big net up with the coonass technique of grabbing it 1/2 way up putting a few weights in the same hand and throwing it.

A 6’ should be fine. It covers 113 sq ft compared to 50 sq ft with a 4’.

They were recommending a 10' net with 1/2" mesh.

Right, my 4' net opens up to 8' across.

The videos i have seen of people throwing 10' nets, they triple loaded it. 1/2 on your shoulder, 1/4 hanging and 1/4 in your off hand.

It looked like a little but more than I would want to do every throw. It doesn't look like you need to do that with an 8'net.

I use a 6' net for bait from the boat. It's just easier to deal with on a boat. Faster to throw.

From the surf I would consider a little bigger net.. maybe a 7' to 10' net depending on your throwing ability. Typically from the surf you are making trips back and forth to dump out your catch. You would be more efficient with a bigger net in these situations but it also weighs more to walk back and forth that many times.

Gotcha. I guess I read it wrong.

I wish I could throw like the Asian ladies at the locks at Rockefeller. It looks like they just ball the net up and throw it. And it opens every time.

I throw a 10’ off the boat. You need that extra height to get the big net to open.

Waist deep in the surf with a 10’ would be impossible since half of the net is below your waist.

You could throw a 6’ with ease from thigh deep water.

Hog is right 9 and 10 I throw from boat no way in surf. Forgot you were asking about surf. I would say 6' is fine.
