Smells funny and looks like a ground cover. You could mow it and it won’t go over 4 inches.
Grows like grass in the same places.

henbit?
That's what I always heard it called.

I don't think that's henbit, but leaf is very similar. Henbit isn't as waxy as your pic makes it look. If it has little purple tubular flowers, it is henbit. Also, it's a little late for henbit in most of the south.
ETA- googling it, there are henbit varieties that do get the thicker waxier leaf, according to google, so yeah I'll go with some variety of henbit that I've never seen before.

It’s not henbit. It looks like some kind of ground cover that escaped from a flowerbed. A broadleaf weed killer from Lowe’s/home depot should kill it.

I may have learned it by a wrong name, but that is a very common plant that grows wild where I grew up. It may be not be native though. It really likes shady areas with damp soil.

If not henbit maybe dollarweed?

Dollar weed looks more like a lily pad to me. Henbit and dollar weed isn’t that green/waxy (the types I have seen). It doesn’t grow like that either. More like clumps. It’s too hot for henbit anywhere in the South East I would think.
I think it’s Creeping Charlie. Google that and see if that’s what it is. That’s where my money would be.

Same here, would also explain the scent. Internet says it's a member of the mint family.

I have that same weed in my backyard. Roundup killed it easily.
