What do you wish you would've known prior to your first deer hunt

I'm late to the deer hunting game, being 30 or so and going on my inaugural deer hunt in a month. It will be a guided deal in TX with some experienced family. I'm stoked.
What do you wish you knew before getting into deer hunting?

Hunting success shouldn't be measured by what you kill. Get out in the woods, relax, and enjoy nature. That's a win whether you kill or not.

That I seriously would much rather miss by a mile than make a bad shot

Always have a sharp knife and a good flash light.
They are a lot heavier than they look like.

With me, the whole not peeing of the stand. I pee all the time, and deer have yet to bust me. Heck, they come up under the stand and smell.

Don’t shoot the first deer that walks out..

How heavily it would weigh on me taking a deer's life. Bittersweet feeling for sure. A feeling that I should give thanks or pay homage to the animal to which I just took
the life of.
As far as being 30 and just now getting into hunting, don't pretend to know about things you don't know about. People generally enjoy helping a new person along and seeing them experience things for the first time. But if that person for some reason feels the need to hide that he's a noob then it will be obvious and annoying.

Never set up a ground blind over a fire ant nest...

If you shoot a big doe in the back she will drop down and blest at you. And also learned that a cotton glove can jam the action of a Winchester pump.

I’m kind of in same boat as you. While I’ve deer hunted through my life, it’s always been in box stands on private lease on food plots. I’m now getting into bow hunting and on public land. Biggest thing I wish I would have done is to taken time to truly learn about deer and their ways. Take lots of notes on every hunt and pattern what you see and how they reacted.

Stay off the phone.
Sit still.
Enjoy the view.

You don’t need the latest or greatest. A 40 year old 30.06 bolt action or a decade old bow will kill the deer as well as that new Credmore or Blackout round or $1,500 compound bow. Don’t skimp on a good pair of boots or rain suit.

If a "doe" comes out alone in broad daylight, it will have nuts.

this. also, in warmer weather you can get away with wearing cheap wal mart camo. When it gets down in to the 20 and teens you're either going to need to spend some money or wear so many layers that you can't move.

That dancer at the local strip bar, probably didn't really have a sick Mom.

You won’t always hear them coming. A deer can be within bow range without you ever hearing them.
And you will almost always mistake the sounds of a squirrel on the ground for a herd of deer.

You will lose your shirt tail if you miss your first deer, and it will be nailed to the camp wall of shame with the date & year.

I bought what is going to be my last Carhart Camo insulated bib overalls and hooded jacket last winter. When you spend big money buy things that will last!
