What do I need to show in order to register an out of state used boat purchase

Am I reading correctly that I just need the title, registration, and notarized bill of sale? Do I pay taxes on the boat and motor or trailer?

You will pay tax on the trailer. You will need a copy of the sellers drivers license, notarized bill of sale and the title on the boat, motor and trailer.

title on the boat, motor and trailer.
If titled, depends on state.

Whats the grace period for registering your boat once a sale is made?

Boat and trailer, not the motor. It's a PITA. Been there, done this.

How do you handle the transfer of an untitled boat in Louisiana?

If from a private seller, you just pay taxes on the trailer. If an out of state dealer you pay taxes on the boat and trailer.

Separate motorized bill of sale for the boat, motor and trailer. Three originals of each. You'll pay taxes on the trailer, which is generally near worthless. Remember that the trailer is not worth much. Dont pay much for the trailer. Have a separate motorized bill of sale for the trailer for the not much that it is worth.

If that's the case I'd buy a $500 trailer with a $500 boat with $65k of outboard on the back

Buying a used boat sounds like a PITA.
I'm most likely backing out of this one as the boat has a lien from a non local bank and I don't feel like dealing with that.

This was for a boat, motor and trailer purchased from an individual in texas and me swapping everything over to Louisiana.
Texas seller:
Boat registered in Texas
Motor titled in Texas
Trailer registered and titled in Texas
I needed notarized bill of sale to register the boat here.
I didn't do anything with the motor because I paid cash for everything and we aren't required to title motors that we own outright in Louisiana. However, I later was told that if a motor is titled in another state, it should be retitled in Louisiana. Having said that, I sold the motor and repowered the boat not long after I got the rig. The new buyer was from Texas and didn't have any issues.
The trailer registration and title was the biggest pain of all. I caught all kinds of hell trying to get a tag. Only way they would do it was with the notarized bill of sale, title and a paper copy of the sellers drivers license.

Yeah, mine was from Ms. and I made the mistake of showing the first title company the Missouri title. Went to second one and pretended the Missouri title didn't exist. All they needed was a text of the seller's driver's license.
Now I wait to hear from Wildlife and Fisheries on what I sent them on the boat/motor.

This was a local sale so not quite what you’re asking for but when I bought mine from a private seller me and the guy went to an ABC Title place and they did everything. Made up the bills of sale, swapped registration on boat and trailer and sent the paperwork to Wildlife for me. I left with a plate and registration for my trailer and the paperwork saying I sent my paperwork to Wildlife. Was easier than I thought. The boat I bought did not have a title, only registration.
Also wanted to add, I was told by the lady at the title place that if the boat purchase was over $2500 it has to have the Louisiana Department of Revenue paperwork (signed by them) verifying the taxes on the boat were paid by the original owner before Wildlife will do anything with it. If it’s under that it goes straight to Wildlife.
