What can I expect to pay on average for various types of ammunition
New firearm owner here. I know there’s an ammo shortage so I’m trying to figure out what about I should expect to pay for ammunition in normal times

It looks like I can get 12 guage bird shot for about .25 a shell and buckshot for $1 a shell. 5.56 seems like I can find for about .75 a round. I’d rather wait until supplies go back up to start stockpiling or at least building up a small supply. I’m also looking into getting a .45 or 9mm and would like to know what those would typically run as well.

Basically I assume prices are inflated because of the shortage so I want to know around what prices would be considered “normal” if such a thing exists.

Before the panic. You could get 1,000 round cases of brass 5.56 for less than 30 cents/ round.
Steel case .223 was around 20 cents/ round

1,000 round case of brass 9mm was around 18 cents/ round

What he said. For an AR roughly .30 for standard brass military stuff, .75 would get you nice match ammo from Black Hills. I think I paid $13/box (20 rounds) for .223 Gold Dots last time I ordered from Palmetto State. Just buy enough to get by and wait to stock up, depending on the election.

Right now Academy will have a box of 20 hollow point 9mm for $15, with a 3-box limit

Yep, the average buy/no buy for a case (1k) was:

9mm $200 all said and done, meaning taxes and shipping.
5.56 I think was $300.

Both were considered baselines, where you could go under, but you really didn't want to go over.

BTW steel cased 9x18 Mak and 7.62x39 (the AK/SKS rd) were also about $200 for a case. Maybe a bit more, say $210.

.45 acp I'm not so up on, but I remember getting S&B and Blazer Brass for around $12-13 a box of 50, so that's going around $260 a case.

re: What can I expect to pay on average for various types of ammunition
Bought 250 pmc 10mm in July for .54/round and classic has it for .96/round 3 months later. Bought a box of BB last weekend for $1.80/round which is price before run up. Underwood is same as before run up so the low volume sales have not moved much but affording before and after is still the question with these high $ bullets.

when things settle, don't overlook factory reloads as well. I use LAX Ammo and it can save you as much as a 5c a round on 9mm.

I had a couple squib rounds with their 9mm bulk from early this year. I would buy again but just be prepared if it goes click and no bang.

I've likely shot over 5000 rounds from them in 9mm and 45 acp, and have never had a single failure. I hope that's not a sign of lowering quality to meet higher demand.
