I have been looking at turkey calls online and I really have no idea what is a good brand and which brands to stay away from.

I am currently using a Zink and it's ok. I'm not in love with it.

What are the OB's impressions of Woodhaven calls?

I'm interested to hear what everyone on the board is using.

Hook's Custom Calls

I find they have a smaller frame. Easier for me to call with. Sound great.

I have a narrow bridge so these may work.

I have never heard of this company.
How long have they been around?

Tried some Preston Pittman calls last year and they were not very user friendly to me. Tried Primos Limb Hanger and they are small, trimmable, and very easy to call with.
Not an expert by any means, but did limit out last year using the LH call both times. Thats what will be in my mouth come turkey season.

That's all that matters.

Hook's Game Calls. The Executioner 2 is a nice call. I also like the Shockwave and the Gamechanger. The Harrison Hoot Stick is the best on the market.

Every call the has Hook's name on it is hand cut by Scott Hook in Batesville, Ar.

Do you have any experience with The Pro, The Duplicator or The Imitator?

Those three make up the Hunter Pack on the Hook Website.

I don't know that I have blown those.

They look like good calls. I have been using Hook's for several years. If you will call Scott at the office you can tell him what style call you like and he will recommend what he thinks would fit your style of calling and sound you like to hear. He can take your order and will mail them to you.

Go buy about 4 or 5 different ones. Everyone will use each a little differently, and it's easier to just find a call that fits the way you play it than it is to try to learn a new call right before the season.

I usually carry 3 or 4. Last year I think I carried 2 Woodhaven, a H.S. Strut, and a flextone. I have about 6 in unopened packs in my closet. I'll probably reuse one of the Woodhavens from last year. It still sounds really good.

I suggest you go get a H.S. Strut Cutting 2.5, a Woodhaven (I don't remember which ones I have, but I know you can get more than one season out of them), and maybe a 3-pack of either flextone, primos or some other brand. You'll end up spending about $5 on the H.S. Strut,$11 on the Woodhaven, and $10-15 on a 3 pack of some other brand. You'll probably find one of them that you can't use. Some just don't work for some people. Throw it in the trash so you aren't tempted to use it. Practice some basic cuts and yelps, and record yourself with your phone from 10-20 ft away. Do this outside if at all possible. Everyone thinks they sound good in the truck or in a home. Things sound different outside.

I will say that being really good on a pot call... Slate or Glass is much much crucial to killing than being good on a mouth call. Spend the extra money and get a quality pot call and some nice stikers. There are several good wood pots out there. I carry a Cody slate and a Hook's glass.

There is a difference between calling and Killing...

For beginners, I can agree with this. For a seasoned turkey killer, you won't find many that prefer a friction call of any kind over a mouth call.

I guess I would just have to settle for being one of the minority.

Thanks fellas

I already have 2 good pot calls that I'm very good on but, I'm try to become better with the mouth calls. I like using the mouth calls more because my hands are on my gun and limits the amount of movement I have to make.

Sounds like I'll probably get a couple of the Woodhaven and the H.S. Strut and probably try the Hook as well.

It's interesting that you say that everyone sounds good in a truck. I find that I sound much better when I'm calling outside rather than inside. I don't know why that is.

A friction call just doesn't fit my style of hunting, or the way you have to kill them on most of the places I hunt. Can't crawl and call from my belly while propped up on a log with hands on a call.

I like to go try them out like duck calls. Open one up, do some yelps and clucks and see how it fits. If I don't like it, I grab another. You go thru enough you'll find one or two you like.

This.

I always liked the double stacked calls. Just like the raspy sound they make. I would go buy a pile of them and see what you like and what fits. Good throng about turkey calls is they are cheap enough to experiment with a few of them.

Quackery Boy Old Boss Hen

Killed about 30 birds in my lifetime with this call alone.

i like the headcrusher calls, I have no idea why being good on a box or a pot would be more important than being good on a mouth call. I think as long as you can call well on one call, regardless of style, you are good. I like knowing I can have both my hands on my gun and still talk to the bird. I also like how soft I can be on a mouth call.
